Types of Competitions

There are two types of competition styles for our Battle of the Books competition. A relay-style competition will test the individual knowledge of each student, while a family-feud style competition will test the knowledge of a group of students. Please watch the videos below to get an idea of how to administer both types of competition.

Relay-Style Competition

Relay Style Group Competition

1. Students will line up as a team, with the test giver far enough away from the group that they the other students cannot hear the question being given (students could line up outside in a hall or on the other side of the classroom)

2. The first student will walk up to the test giver to receive the first question

3. The student has 15 seconds to answer the question, but can only give one answer

4. Once the student has answered, they will go to the back of the line (do NOT tell them if they answered correctly)

5. If the student provides the correct answer, they will receive full points (Five points for title and two points for author) and you will give the next student in line the second question

6. If the student does not provide the correct answer, the second student will receive the same question with the chance to receive partial points (3 points for title and 1 bonus point for author)

7. If the second student does not answer the question (given for the second time) correctly, that question is now retired and you will give a new question to the next student

8. If every student answers every question correctly, that means they will have received 16 questions

9. If every student answers every question incorrectly, that means they will have received 8 questions

10. Once there have been 16 rounds of questions, tally the point on the scorecard and write down the grand total, which will not exceed 128 points
