Resources to Send Home
Before starting the Battle of the Books program in your classroom or at your school, please send out a student permission form to be signed by the parent of each child. This permission form will provide information about the program and to give parents a chance to approve of their child reading from the book list. Students must have this form signed and returned to the school in order to officially participate in the program. We recommend sending home the parent permission form with a basic FAQs page. Please copy and modify the parent permission form and FAQs page to fit the needs of your school.

Tracking Progress
When a student has read a book from the list, they will need to "pass off" that book before earning a button and being marked as complete. Each school will do this a little bit differently. Some schools use the AR program to test for knowledge, some have the students complete a summary of the book, and some do studies of the novel as a class, allowing each student in the class to "pass off" that book. Once a student has successfully passed off a book, there are several ways in which you can track that student's progress. One option is to get a folder for each student and glue the individual tracker to the front. This option allows students to file anything they would like to use as study materials for the competition. The other option is to track class progress in a spreadsheet. This option allows for automatic calculation of how many books each student has read, and allows you to see how many students have read each book.

Testing for Understanding
If you are looking for an easy way for students to test their understanding of a book, Kahoot! is a great way to assess their knowledge either as a whole class or in small groups. The books that have quizzes available are linked to the left. If you want to get more familiarized with Kahoot!, your school STS would be happy to help.
