Dear parents

This half term has passed so quickly and the holidays is upon us already. Although things aren't quite back to normal, school has been very busy and the children have really been enjoying their learning. It was lovely seeing the children walking in this morning in their spooky outfits! We have tweeted photos of some of the children in their outfits and uploaded some photos on our website- do have a look!

Thank you to those parents who are wearing masks at drop off and pick up. It is very important we all do our bit to ensure we are socially distancing at drop off and pick up and that children do not mix with different classes. We are doing everything we can to reduce the risk of COVID 19 transmission in our school and appreciate your support.

We currently have one vacancy for a LEC parent member at the school. This is a great opportunity to join the Local Education Committee and make a difference. Please click here for more information.

It's been great that so many parents were able to attend the virtual GPPSA AGM and there were so many new volunteers wanting to join the committee. I'm pleased to say the GPPSA were able to fill the vacancies required, thank you to everyone who has volunteered.

We announced our exciting new project 'Be Connected' last week where all pupils from year one upwards across the trust will receive their very own Chromebook to use at home as well as at school. We are currently waiting on the delivery of our Chromebooks from LGFL and hoping that they will be delivered to our school by the end of the autumn term. More information will be sent out to parents next half term. Watch this space!

Hope you all have a restful half term and stay safe. Look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 2 November.

Attendance

All parents want the best for their children and for them to get on well in life. Having a good education is important to ensure that they have the best opportunities in their adult life. In the current climate it is understandable that you may have some concerns with sending your child to school at times, but please be reminded of the following:

  1. Children only get one chance at school, and your child’s future may be affected by not attending school regularly. If children do not attend school regularly they may:

  • Struggle to keep up with school work.

  • Miss out on the social side of school life. Poor attendance can affect children’s ability to make and keep friendships; a vital part of growing up.

  1. Setting good attendance patterns from an early age will also help your child later on in their life. Children who have a poor school attendance record may have less chance of securing a job when they are adults. Being on time is also vital. Arriving late at school can be very disruptive for your child, their teacher and the other children in the class.

Please click here to view 'COVID-19 related absences from school- a quick guide for parents' for more information on what should you do if your child is feeling unwell. Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding attendance.

Congratulations to GROVELANDS family for having the best attendance over the first half term, of 96.22%, just 0.78% shy of our whole school target of 97%

Congratulations to the following classes for having the overall best attendance in their family:

  • Ash in Broomfield

  • Puma in Grovelands

  • Dragonfly in Oakwood

  • Lowry in Trent

Well done!

Please note all these attendance figures do not include children who are self isolating.

Keeping Children Safe

Halloween and Fireworks Night

Tips for COVID Safe Halloween

  • Organise a Halloween Treasure Hunt within your own household

  • Host a virtual party with themed games and music

  • Watch a scary movie with the family (but not too scary!) and dress as your favourite characters

  • Decorate your own house and organise a spooky trail, avoiding face-to-face contact

  • Carve or decorate pumpkins with members of your household and displaying them in your window or outside

  • Get the Bake Off vibe and gather the household to make ghoulish and tasty Halloween cakes and biscuit

  • Organise a Halloween scavenger hunt by hiding Halloween treats (and tricks) in and around your home for your children to find

  • Have a virtual Halloween costume competition using a video chat app

Trick or Treating

If you do decide to go trick or treating despite the risks, please take extra care. Do not gather in groups on the pavement and in doorways or mix with other groups of trick or treaters. Stay in your household bubble and keep up social distancing - that’s two witch brooms or six wands between you!

Tempting as they are, do not dip into shared tubs of sweet treats. You never know how many sticky fingers have been in there or if they washed their hands first. You don’t want to pick up a horror-filled Covid surprise.

Don’t leave the house if you have any of the Covid symptoms. You must self-isolate immediately and book a test.

Tips for Covid Safe Bonfire Night

  • Lots of public fireworks celebrations are being cancelled due to social distancing rules

  • It's likely that most larger bonfire night events won't be able to go ahead

  • Only adults should deal with setting up firework displays, the lighting of fireworks and the safe disposal of fireworks once they have been used

  • Children and young people should be supervised, and watch and enjoy fireworks at a safe distance

Have a great time!

Top 10 tips for safer fireworks

1.Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable

2. Only buy fireworks, which carry the CE mark, keep them in a closed box and use them one at a time

3. Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary

4. Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back

5. Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks

6. Never return to a firework once it has been lit

7. Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them

8. Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators

9. Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire

10. Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.

Network Rail Community Safety

Network Rail usually sees a rise in trespass on the railway during school holidays. During Covid-19, while many holiday activities are closed, there is a greater risk than usual that young people will seek diversion on the railway tracks; a pattern that was observed over the summer. Enfield has seen a concerning number of trespass incidents involving young people during the last year.

A video and resources has been produced for primary school-aged children to encourage young people to stay safe around the railway. When you click the link above you will see a video about the dangers of trespass and how to use level crossings safely.

Parking

It is illegal to park your car on the white zig zags/school keep clear markings outside the school to drop off or pick up your child. It has been witnessed that parents have stopped along the road or on the 'keep clear' markings and children have come out of cars on their own. This could result in a fatal accident. Please help us to keep each other safe.

Free Property Marking Kit - Smart Water

The Metropolitan Police are working in partnership with a property marking company to help reduce residential burglary by supplying residents with free property marking kits (Smart Water).

To receive a Smart Water kit please either email: NAMailbox-.MetTrace@met.police.uk or Tel: 0208 345 4400 providing your name and contact details.

Times Tables RockStars

See the results for each year group over the last 14 days. Our percentage of active players is climbing slowly, but we still need a big push to get more children using the app. Please remember to participate if you haven't already! Well done to those of you who are using the program a lot and hopefully seeing an improvement in your maths. Here, you can also see the outcome of the family battles!

Sporting Update

Over the next two weeks all Grange Park Primary children from Reception to Year 6 will be taking part in the Enfield borough Virtual Netball skills challenge organised by the Enfield PE Team. This is the second virtual inter school competition.

Children will participate in the activities during PE lessons with their PE coach. Each child will attempt the various skills based challenges. Although this is a virtual competition, the emphasis will be on having fun and trying your best. The challenges include: bounce pass, run and pivot, shooting and a shuttle run.

All the challenges will be timed by the coaches and they will submit the results to a master scoresheet which will include results from other Enfield schools. Watch this space!

National Poetry Day

To help us celebrate this year’s National Poetry Day, all children across the school dedicated time to read, learn and perform a range of poems including those by Benjamin Zephaniah and Michel Rosen. The children’s enthusiasm was clear to see and some even used text maps to help them with their performance.

Here is the Year 1 text map.

Extend: Breakfast, Afterschool and Holiday Club

What a whirlwind start to Extend it has been! After a lot of planning and preparation we were able to welcome children back to breakfast and after school club again and it has been a delight. Although things may be a little different at the moment, the children have settled in and adapted to the changes at the club exceptionally well. They have been able to take part in fun activities and socialise with their bubble whilst playing, both indoors and outdoors. Click here for more information about Extend. Elizabeth Care Lodge

Before breaking up for the summer, we established a relationship with this local care home and collated a variety of work from the children across the school to send to the residents. The children submitted wonderful pieces of art, letters and cards which we put together in a lovely scrapbook.

A representative from Elizabeth Lodge contacted the school last week and shared how much they loved the children's work and how it was so uplifting for all of the residents to see. In return they have given us a collection of their own pieces of art and photographs which was really heartwarming and we are looking forward to developing our relationship with the care home this year. Thank you all so much again for your contributions. It is so lovely to know that so much happiness and appreciation is felt when such a small gesture is made.

Year Group News

Nursery

Our nursery acorns have been busy practising their counting and learning about numbers.

These acorns have been learning to work collaboratively to build a giant train track.

Reception

In Reception we have been very busy! The children have started learning their phonics sounds, exploring measuring things, counting and recognising numbers and retelling the story ‘Owl Babies.’ We are following the class rules, looking after the class resources and being kind to each other.

Tulip class have been cutting out five little speckled frogs to turn into stick puppets so they can act out the nursery rhyme!

Look at this impressive speckled frog!

Here the children are learning the actions for 'Talk for Writing'. They have learnt 'The', 'Who' and 'The End' and are using the actions successfully in their retelling of the story of the 'Owl Babies'.

We also have some fantastic props that the children have enjoyed using to retell the story and bring it to life in Daffodil class.

Year 1

Year 1 have been practising their writing skills over this half term. We started our year writing a narrative based on The Rainbow Serpent, a traditional tale with lots of adjectives, conjunctions and words that show the passing of time. More recently we have been writing our own set of instructions. We made the smoothie in class and followed that with our step by step instructions using bossy verbs and time conjunctions. Look at our pictures to see the class getting busy making their smoothies.

Year 2

In Year 2 for Maths we have been learning our number bonds to 20. We challenged ourselves to use the inverse operation to check our answers. We made excellent progress and presented our number sentences using bar models.

“The biggest number always goes in the top box."

“In a bar model the top box is the biggest number which is the total.”

“To check our answer we can do the inverse but the biggest number which is the total number goes first”

Year 3

In Science we explored the role of the stem to see if food colouring would be transported to the rest of the flower.

We then recorded our results and found the food colouring travelled up the stem which shows how important the stem is as it helps transport nutrients and water to the rest of the plant.

Year 4

The children of Year 4 have enjoyed learning about the ancient Greeks as part of our Learning Quest topic.

We have explored areas of Law, Democracy, the Gods, Myths and Legends, Alexander the Great and even the Olympics!

The children took part in democratic debates before making voting decisions, though back in Ancient Greece this would have only been voted for by educated Athenian men and philosophers.

When exploring the Olympics, the children used their learning to create news reports about the very first Olympics in Athens. They decided upon roles for each of their group before making a script and recording themselves.

Year 5

In celebration of National Poetry Day, we shared some of our favourite poems and then followed this up by researching facts about our class planets. We used our research to create our own acrostic poems. Have a look at the lovely poetry from Year 5, we hope you like and learn something new from them!

Leyla, Mercury

Hannah, Mercury

We have also been learning about forces in science. We have been working hard to make connections to our prior learning.

Pupils investigating questions about water resistance.

Year 6

During this half term, Year 6 have been learning about light and dark in our Science lessons. The children designed and carried out their own investigations to explore shadows and what can affect their size.

It was important that the investigations were ‘fair tests’ and that the children knew which variables needed to change and those that needed to stay the same. Well done Year 6 for being such super scientists!
