Dear parents

This term has certainly been a term like no other! Grange Park has been slightly different for the children this term however I am so impressed with how the children have adjusted and managed well to all the changes. They have all been incredible. A big thank you to all the parents for your continued support and understanding. I know it hasn't been easy this term particularly with having to manage childcare and home learning , if classes have been self isolating. But your ongoing support is much appreciated.

The children have been having a lovely time taking part in so many festive activities including their Christmas parties (and we even had virtual Christmas parties for classes who were self isolating!) Although we weren't able to invite nursery, reception and Year 2 parents in to watch their Christmas performances as usual, I'm sure the parents enjoyed the virtual recording which was just wonderful!

I am very sad to say that we will be saying goodbye to Lynsey Jennings who has secured a promotion in another school. I know that Lynsey will be missed by many children, staff and parents. We are also sad to be saying goodbye to Sheena Hughes, Butterfly Class teacher. I know you will join me in wishing them both the very best.

We're pleased to say that Gill Radcliffe will be joining us in January who will be the class teacher for Butterfly Class. Chloe Goldsmith is also starting in January who will be in Tulip class with Olivia Penfold and then Chloe will take over from Olivia once she goes on maternity leave. We are also welcoming Clair Mullen who will be working in the office. I know you will all make them feel welcome when they start.

Thank you to the parents who put themselves forward to be part of the Local Education Committee. I am pleased to announce that our new parent LEC member is Ozan Suleyman.

We are delighted to say that January will start the roll out of our 1:1 chromebooks. This will give every pupil in years 1 to 6 access to a Chromebook for use at school and home. We have been busily preparing for the roll out and we will send some information out the first week back of the spring term.

We hope that you all stay well and manage to have a restful holiday with your families. As the staff haven't managed to stand at the gates at the end of term signing Christmas carols, we thought we'd put together a Christmas greeting video instead! Click here to view. We look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 4 January 2021.

With my very best wishes to you and your family.

Attendance

Good attendance at school is not just beneficial, it’s essential. Attending school is directly linked to improved academic performance which in turn leads to further learning opportunities and better job prospects. As well as this, going to school helps to develop friendships, social skills, school values, life skills, cultural awareness and career pathways. As a school, we aim for 97% attendance to ensure our children have the best possible chance in education, while still continuing to be safe and cautious due to COVID-19. Please note the % below removes those who are self isolating.

Well done, Tiger class, for having the best attendance for Broomfield family in Autumn 2, and well done all of Broomfield family for having the best attendance overall!

Well done, Puma class, for having the best attendance of all the classes in Grovelands family for the second half of the Autumn term! And well done for a very good family attendance overall. Keep up the good work!

Well done, Dragonfly class, for staying brilliant and nearly always being at school! This will really have helped your learning. Also well done to all of our Oakwood family classes for having high attendance data, as we had the second highest percentage of all the families. Keep up the good work!

Well done, Cedar class, for having the best attendance in Trent family - that will really help with your learning.

Keeping Children Safe

COVID-19 Contact Tracing

As we head into the winter break, please remember to let the school know, by emailing the school office (office@grangeparkprimaryelt.org) if your child tests positive for Covid-19 at the start of the holidays. We have been provided with the following guidance from the Department for Education:

  • For the first 6 days after teaching ends, if a pupil or staff member tests positive for coronavirus (Covid-19), having developed symptoms within 48 hours of being in school, the school is asked to assist in identifying close contacts and advising self-isolation, as the individual may have been infectious whilst in school.

  • Where a pupil or staff member tests positive for coronavirus (Covid-19), having developed symptoms more than 48 hours since being in school, the school should not be contacted. Parents should follow contact tracing instructions provided by NHS Test and Trace.

  • Where a school has its last teaching day on Thursday 17th December, pupil contact tracing will be until Wednesday 23rd December.

We will notify parents via parentmail if classes have to self isolate due to being a close contact.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

5 ways to wellbeing

The current climate has posed many challenges to the mental health and wellbeing of our children and families. To support you during these challenging times, we have collated a list of websites that you can access at home to support you.

One way in which we encourage children at Grange Park to regain a sense of control over their mental wellbeing is to practise the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: 1. give to others, 2. connect, 3. be aware, 4. be active and 5. keep learning.

Encourage your child to practise these at home. Please read the Make it Count information which gives ideas on staying mentally healthy.

What can I do at home?

  • Find the time to talk, just the two of you to ‘check in’ with your child

  • Playing together encourages children to be curious

  • Be a role model and show how you manage your feelings.

Young minds

Young Minds is a charity that offers support and guidance on young people’s mental health.

Every Mind Matters: NHS

Check out these top tips from the NHS on looking after your child’s mental health.

https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/childrens-mental-health/

Take a look at this older section of the Every Mind Matters website, put together back in the Spring. This has some great little videos that give you some practical ideas for you and your children, for example, how to reframe negative thoughts and some great sleep tips!

Within each of the links provided, you will also find further links and guidance to additional support if you feel that you need it.

Information for Young Carers

Who is a Young Carer?

A young carer is a child aged 5 – 18 years old who provides regular on-going care to another person, (usually a parent or sibling), who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or has other additional needs.

You may be a young carer if you:

    • care for a family member, because of illness, disability

    • help someone with bathing or dressing, going to the toilet or getting into/out of bed

    • need to cook for your family

    • look after money or organise the family budget

    • help anyone to take medication regularly

    • collect prescriptions or benefits on behalf of someone else or go shopping for the family

    • look after brothers or sisters, by taking them to school, doing their laundry, or cooking their meals

    • take care of housework, such as dusting, vacuuming, washing or ironing

    • speak on behalf of someone who has difficulty speaking or communicating for themselves

    • translate or interpret for someone at home

Many young people don’t see themselves as carers and may not realise there is practical and emotional support available in Enfield. There is free personalised support that can be accessed by young carers and their families, that will be developed to suit their individual needs. Support can include social activities, counselling, funding for equipment etc.

Families or young carers themselves can self-refer or a referral can be made by professionals including GPs, NHS staff, Social Workers and teachers/senior staff in school.

Please contact Jodian Forrester (Young Carer’s Coordinator) for more information, should you feel this may apply to you or someone in your family.

Parking

Please be reminded that it is illegal to park your car on the white zig zags/school keep clear markings outside the school to drop off or pick up your child. Local residents are still reporting that parents are parking on the white zig zags and across driveways. Please help us to keep each other safe.

Following a review of the risk assessment in place for the use of the school park, and having consulted with Enfield Council's Health and Safety Officer, parents/carers will no longer be able to drive into the car park for the purposes of dropping off or collecting their child(ren) from school for any reason. This applies to parents using the car park to drop off and pick up when using Extend.

I am aware that this will only affect a very small minority of parents but it is important that everybody complies with this instruction. Driving into the school site increases the risk of accidents occurring and there simply is not enough parking space to allow parents access. The problem has been compounded by having to take several car parking bays out of commission because of landslide issues around the perimeter of the school grounds.

For those parents who feel this will cause significant difficulty, including blue badge holders, every effort will be made to consider alternative options. For example, we have an agreement with Old Grammarians RFC, and any parent can use this car park.

I am sure you understand that this is a necessary measure on the grounds of safety for the whole school community.

Reading for Pleasure

To promote Reading for Pleasure and widen the children's knowledge of books and authors, we have decided to celebrate an author each half term. The idea is for the children to explore some of the books that the chosen author has written. When the children have finished reading a book, it would be fantastic to hear what they thought of the story. The children’s reviews could either be a video or a written review which could be emailed into the school office.

This half term, our chosen author will be Judith Kerr. She has written many wonderful books for all age groups.

We have made a link with a Spanish school in Madrid. The purpose of this link is to share resources and projects with them to bring the children of Grange Park a real experience of learning Spanish.

In year 4, we have learnt 'Cascabel' (Jingle Bells). Children have put so much effort to learn the lyrics and the results are amazing.

Some of the projects that we will carry out throughout the year will be to send letters, emails, cards with messages and much more!

To celebrate Christmas, we have started the project of sending Christmas cards, sharing a Christmas carol and virtual Christmas cards.

Nursery

Christmas preparations have been in full swing this week in nursery!

The children have painted their feet to make reindeer.

They have created ‘wishlist’ stockings for Santa, decorated Christmas trees and discovered the wonder of snow.

It's fun painting feet!

More feet painting!

Adding antlers, eyes and red noses to their reindeer faces.

There has been so much excitement in Acorn as the children decorated a real Christmas tree.

They worked together with glue sticks at the ready to construct a ‘Super super long’ paper chain garland for our Christmas party.

This term the children have been learning to write the letter sounds in their name and made extra special gift tags for Christmas.

"I see a reindeer, a Christmas tree and presents and some snowflakes." Shanvi - Acorn

Reception

Reception has been getting into the Christmas spirit and we have been enjoying a variety of activities such as making Christmas cards ready for our walk to the postbox, writing Christmas lists and making Christmas decorations.

Look at our Christmas decorations made of clay.

A Christmas list to Santa. “For Christmas I would like a transformer, a pen, a Peppa pig house, a toy dolls house and a toy teddy."

Year 1

Year 1 have stepped into a new realm of experience this half term. We had a virtual visitor from the church to enrich our topic on Christianity and the symbols of Christmas for Christians. Tom visited us from his church in Cockfosters, to talk us through why gifts, trees, advent calendars, special stars and many more things, are important symbols for Christians at this time of year. The children were able to ‘unmute’ themselves to ask really interesting questions.

Why is Christmas important to Christians? (Fay - Dragonfly)

Why is Gold a Christmas colour? (Olivia - Butterfly)

Why do we get presents? (Ethan - Ladybird)

When did we start celebrating Christmas? (Nicole - Grasshopper)

Thank you again Tom Inman for your fantastic virtual workshop!

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have been looking at a 'stone giant’s footprints'.

“We saw ginormous footprints outside. When I saw them I thought they were dinosaur’s' footprints. I was scared and excited because I thought it was looking for food!’ Grace - Kingfisher

Text map on google classroom.

The children really enjoyed English this week.

“We’re learning a new text map which will help me trap a stone giant.” Luke - Kingfisher

Children acting out their trap making.

Year 3

Year 3 were sent something very surprising from the Natural History Museum to find out more about the diet of Stone Age people. They were sent Stone Age excrement!

Once everyone had become acclimatised to the smell, we began to explore the excrement.

The children identified plants, seeds and meat in the excrement and drew conclusions about what humans ate in the palaeolithic period of the Stone Age.

“I found a berry!” Adem - Willow Class

“I think they gathered and ate seeds when they didn’t have any animals to eat.” Katerina - Willow

The children then compared the diet of Stone Age humans with our modern day diet.

“The diet of Stone Age humans was healthier than our diet today because they hadn’t discovered sugar yet." Sewal - Willow

“I think we are healthier because we know more about how to have a balanced diet and they didn’t have much dairy, so it wasn’t a very balanced diet.” Eliz - Willow

Once they’d finished their investigations… we told them it wasn’t real! Suddenly it didn’t smell so bad.

Year 4

This week we have been replicating the artistic style of Paul Cezanne, producing effective still life paintings. We have been exploring composition and how to use different tones to create a naturalistic still life painting.

We learned how to change the tone of our watercolours to create highlights, midtones and shadows to give the illusion of three dimensions.

To produce our final pictures we have been refining our sketching techniques to create basic outlines before adding shading using the watercolours to create 3D effects.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been immersing themselves in a new unit in English: non-fiction explanation texts. We have been interrogating both the language and structural features which make these texts unique. To do so, we have been finding explanation texts in real life, annotating and innovating our WAGOLL and rehearsing our text map.

“Text maps are really important as they help us understand what the text is about and how we can write something similar." Adalane - Neptune.

“When we learn the next text type, we compete in races within our class: who can do it the fastest, who can use the most expression and can we be better than our teacher." Andreas - Neptune.

All of the teachers have been amazed at our intonation, pace and actions. Amazingly, we have been practising at school and at home for our home learning.

“We flashback to our text map when we are writing our hot write or at the end of each lesson as it acts as a reminder of what we could include to be successful.” Ceren - Neptune.

Year 6

We were extremely fortunate to have Jayesh Bhatt come into school and talk to the children about their current topic in religious education - Hinduism. He discussed the religion in depth and shared information relevant to the curriculum, especially the Puja Plate and the significance of the items that are placed on it.

Well done to the children for their effort during the assessments that have taken place recently, and despite all that is currently going on in the world, they performed admirably. They deserve such credit for their efforts this term, in an extremely difficult and uncertain time to be in their final year of primary education. Hats off to you all and keep up the hard work.
