Farewell! 5/22/24

Salam 3B Parents,

As the school year comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to say goodbye and wish you all a fantastic summer!

To my amazing third graders: I have loved every minute of our time together this year. Your curiosity, kindness, and hard work have made this year so special. Remember to keep reading, exploring, and having fun in nature! I can't wait to hear about all your summer adventures when we see each other again, inshallah.

    News

The end-of-the-year ceremony will be on Thursday, May 30th from 8:05- 9:05, inshallah. If you have not signed up for the End of the year gift, please do so, now. Next week, we will have TerraNova state testing. I don't want the students to stress about this. I want them to understand that it's important to show your abilities, but they should not worry about it. It’s our job to help students be prepared and successful. I ask that you allow them to have plenty of rest, play outside every day, and eat a healthy breakfast before coming to school. They should be here at 7:45 sharp daily. These steps are super important. Please work with me on this. On my end, I will provide students with the good old-fashioned pep talk to help them understand that they CAN do this and that they ARE educated enough to do their best! They have also learned many strategies throughout this year on how to tackle problems. Exams can be very intimidating, the most important thing is for them to be calm and emotionally ready.

Almost done! 4/25/24

Salam 3B Parents,

The students had an outstanding time at Hidden Villa. They did so many things there. They hiked, listened to the sounds of nature, made a natural salad straight from the earth, fed chickens, ate flowers, played in creeks, and ate lunch amongst the trees. The staff was so kind and helpful. The volunteers were a great help as always. We ended up staying longer than we expected. Thank you all for being patient with us. The students would have camped there if they could :)

I encourage you to take your child outside in nature at least once a week. It is the greatest place to heal and recharge. It has so many benefits, so ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS! We are blessed to live in an area that allows us to be outside often, alhamduallah.

We are published authors, mashallah! Our classbooks will be coming in next week, inshallah! The students are so excited! We started i-Ready diagnostics last week. Please have them play outside after school, sleep early, eat a healthy breakfast, and bring an extra snack and a cold water bottle with them every weekday.

Social Studies:  We completed branches of government. We will learn about the US Constitution and the preamble.

News The Student Council is thrilled to announce the commencement of Penny Wars once again this year, aimed at supporting the people of Gaza through PIOUS PROJECTS. Penny Wars not only serves as a means of fundraising but also fosters a sense of healthy competition among all GIS students and staff. This fundraiser involves the use of real coins in the donation process, providing students with a hands-on approach to giving back. Each grade level will have a designated money jug clearly labeled and placed in the lobby.

The objective is for teams to accumulate the most points (with 1 penny equating to 1 point) by the end of the "war." While pennies, nickels, and dimes contribute positively to a team's score, quarters will serve as tools for sabotage. By depositing quarters (equivalent to 25 points each) into other teams' containers, teams can deduct 25 points from their competitors.

Let's come together, have fun, and increase our good deeds, insha'Allah

Please send a snack and water bottle in case they need to break their fast. We want to encourage them but they are still learning and practicing. It's good to be in school where many are fasting too, it allows them to feel a part of something bigger and the busy day keeps their minds off of hunger.

    News

The students had another Growth Mindset lesson with me on A.N.Ts (Automatic negative thoughts). We discussed that A.N.TS are those toxic thoughts that we have regularly. These thoughts usually start with “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t deserve this happiness/success/love etc.”  The students were taught that anything that comes after the words "I AM.." is very powerful and can affect us either positively or in a negative manner. In reality, perfectionism is impossible because life is full of challenges and setbacks, which inevitably happen at some point, no matter who you are! Negative automatic thoughts can be destructive, leading to feelings of guilt and shame. It’s important to recognize these thoughts for what they are – just thoughts, without any basis in reality. The students learned about the different types of A.N.Ts like the mind-reading ant, the all-or-nothing ant, the fortune teller ant, the blaming ant, and many more. We discussed ways how to defeat them and the importance of positive self-talk. I advise you to re-read the book Captain Snout with them and continue reinforcing this at home.

Encourage your child to unleash their creativity and choose from various options:

1. **Dress Like You're 100:** Let the kids have a blast transforming into centenarians! Grey wigs, glasses, and some creative wrinkles can make for some hilarious and heartwarming costumes.

2. **100 Items Attire:** Another fantastic option is to dress in an outfit adorned with 100 items. This could be anything from stickers and buttons to small toys or even colorful pom-poms. The possibilities are endless. We look forward to seeing the creativity and enthusiasm your children will bring to this special day.

We are working on contractions in phonics and finishing our third writing piece. This time they are writing about a person they would be for one whole day. Some of them chose interesting people like Yuji Naka! We will begin our first novel in mid-January, inshallah. It is The One and Only Ivan. Math: In math, we are done with Module 7. The test will be tomorrow. Please review tonight with your child. The review was sent home. Module 8 will be learning to connect and apply them to solve 2-step problems.

Science: We are still on Chapter 2 Energy and its Forms. We will be learning about the transformation of energy through a hands-on experiment/lab.

Social Studies:  We have two more tribes to learn about in our Native American unit. As we learn about the indigenous people, the students are gaining an understanding that certain terms used to refer to Native Americans may now be considered offensive. While many Native Americans refer to each other as Indians, some object to the term because it is associated with explorer Christopher Columbus, who mistook the Caribbean islands for those of the Indian Ocean, known as the Indies. Thus, people Indigenous to the Americas were dubbed Indians. The term "Indian" has been troublesome ever since. We consider saying “Indigenous people,” “Native people," "American Indians," or “First Nation” people instead.

This week, we will learn about the Southeast Woodlands and the North Eastwoodlands. There is a Native American Heritage online library they can refer to HERE.  The students will create vests in art next week to show their understanding of what they learned. The test will be on Tuesday 1/19/23.

NEWS

Our Middle and High School student councils are working together to create a day dedicated to Palestine on Tuesday, November 21st. This will include everyone dressing up in Palestinian colors and activities about Palestine based on grade level. The theme for this day is "Once Upon a Time in Palestine." The goal and purpose of this is to show solidarity and build a sense of community with our school but also to allow students to express themselves and their feelings about the matter at hand. We are attaching a short description of each grade level's activities and how it connects to the overarching theme for teachers to be prepared as well.  Each grade level will work on a project and decorate their class board outside of their classrooms, by Monday, November 20th, insha'Allah.

Our 3rd graders will be writing Letters/cards to the children of Gaza

Significance: A touching gesture of empathy by sending letters and heartfelt cards to the children of Gaza. In a world where borders are dividing, these messages can become bridges, carrying words of hope and solidarity to young souls facing the harsh realities. We hope that each letter can allow the children to display their love and support for children in Gaza.

Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's was a phenomenal experience. That will continue to be my favorite field trip of all time. There are so many cool skills they learn in two hours. They learned how a supermarket works, what organic means, why it's important to buy local produce, what pesticides are, the value of money, what the workers have to go through every morning to get the products out on the floor, what -15 degrees feels like, and how to recycle and reuse. They also experienced the act of shopping alone without mom or dad there to tell them NO! - Well some of them, at least :)

Reminders/ Events:

I hope your Thanksgiving Break is filled with much love, warmth, family, good food...

and tons of thankfulness. Happy Thanksgiving!

Finally! 11/1/23

Salam 3B Parents,

ELA: This week we worked on abstract nouns and concrete nouns. The students also focused on the short o sound with their patterns (aw, au, o). We also reviewed context clues to help us identify the meanings of challenging words in vocabulary. The students are working hard on their dictionary skills. They are really getting the hang of using a dictionary properly and understanding how guide words help us. They have also worked on the relationship between cause and effect, and the importance of understanding a character's perspective in comprehension.

Math: In math, we finished Module 5 lessons. We will review the module and the test will be on Monday, inshallah. Module 6 is the foundation for division. They are excited about it! This week we also played more partner multiplication math games. They love doing this and it's really allowing them to become more fluent with the multiples of numbers. They created Multiplication Wheels as well. They loved this because it allowed them to see the pattern of a wheel and how you can use it as a helpful tool to multiply.

Science: We will continue the next lesson on forces and motion. What is Gravity?

Social Studies:  We will have a project next Wednesday for the California Regions. A guide with directions was sent out yesterday. Please read it carefully, and have students return it completed by Monday. All items will be required to be in class by Wednesday 11/8. Points will be deducted for anyone who does not bring the necessary materials or return the completed form on the day of the project.

Math Games! 10/23/23

Salam 3B Parents,

ELA: This week we will work on inferencing and drawing conclusions. We will also learn about silent beginnings in phonics (gn, kn, wr), dictionary Skills, context clues, and using commas. If your child did not bring a dictionary or thesaurus please check the supply list to ensure you purchase the correct books. They are required. We will continue with a new topic in narrative writing. Some of the students have also started meeting with our reading specialist Sr. Tehmina twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) While they are out of the room, we do not start new content. We get into our Daily 5. The students work on writing and reading. I meet with each group as well. We have a book club where we read a particular leveled book together, discuss it, and analyze the content in it.

Math: In math, finished Module 4 and will take the test tomorrow. The review was sent home today to go over. We have been playing math games daily which only takes about 5-6 minutes but has an enormous effect on multiplication fact fluency. Students respond to learning when engaged, challenged, and enjoying their tasks. There is quite a difference when they are active participants!

Math Games create a context for developing math skills. Through games, students can discover ways to apply what they have learned in the classroom. They feel motivated to find creative solutions and take an active part in their own learning. They also provide opportunities to explore math concepts and notice new patterns and relationships. These games offer another way to practice computational fluency, in a more engaging way than traditional drills and worksheets.

Science: We will discuss How Mass affects motion, friction, and gravity.

Social Studies:  We will continue California Regions- Mountain Region. We will have a hands-on project in two weeks to complete this unit.  Information on the project will be sent in their take-home folder soon. Please keep an eye out for that.

NEWS

Today we practiced a planned Lockdown Drill. Safety continues to be an ongoing conversation with our staff and students. We feel it’s important to remind you about our safety procedures. As required by law, we practice earthquake drills, lockdown drills, and shelter-in-place drills throughout the year to make sure we are prepared for an emergency. Our school has worked diligently to correctly develop and implement safety procedures. The students will practice the actual procedures of gathering in a corner of the classroom out of sight tomorrow as well. The goal of drills is to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries in an actual emergency. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills. Please talk with your child about lockdowns if you deem it appropriate. Our goal, while practicing important safety procedures, is to be sure all students feel safe. Safety is our number one priority.  I always tell my students "The way you practice is how you perform." If you ever have questions about school safety, please contact your principal or vice principal.

We will also go over skills including revising and editing, phonics LONG O and triple r blends sounds, synonyms, verb tenses, and inferencing.

Math: In math, we are working on Module 4 with the Distributive Property. This property is a bit intimidating, but it's a strategy that is useful, important, and will be used in real life as they grow. We became distributive doctors for the day! They LOVED this! I even referred to them as Dr. Ahmad or Dr. Mazen the entire period :) You should have seen their faces light up when I called them all doctors!!! Our first “operation” as newly named Distributive Doctors was to use our scalpels, otherwise known as popsicle sticks, to cut our arrays. Using EXPO markers, the doctors wrote on their desks a multiplication expression for each of the arrays. This made their day! Next, we added both arrays together to find the total. We repeated this a few more times and practiced “breaking apart” the arrays in both horizontal and vertical directions.

Science: We will begin with Forces and Motion as we dig deeper into push, pull, friction, gravity, forces, and motion.

Social Studies:  We will start with the regions of California- desert region, mountain region, coastal region, and central valley. We will dig deeper into one region weekly.

Kobe! 10/4/23

Aloha 3B Parents,

ELA: This week we are finishing paragraph writing. We will continue using paragraph writing until the students gain strength in their writing skills. We also reviewed all of our skills including revising and editing, phonics sounds, prefixes and suffixes, compound sentences, and punctuation to prepare for the Unit test tomorrow.

Math: We finished Module 3. The students did an exceptional job on the test. They are really gaining stamina and strength in multiplication. We will Start Module 4 tomorrow- Understanding Multiplication Properties and using them as strategies. They are almost done with their zoos as they master area. They will be up on the bulletin board by Friday, inshallah.

Science: We finished The Nature of Science and will take the test tomorrow. Next week, we will dive into Forces and Motion.

Social Studies:  We will complete our CA state symbols project next week. This is a hands-on approach to retaining the symbols that we have been learning about so much. There will be a quiz next week too. If anyone has 21 flat shells and would like to donate them to our class project, send them in.

NEWS: Kobe finally made his debut in 3B! I told them that Kobe doesn't like loud noises, so the class has never been more mindfully calm, mashallah. It was just beautiful! We should keep him here forever :) The students loved petting him and even shared some carrots and lettuce with him. Subhanallah, it was amazing to witness the effect an animal has on human beings. I am a strong believer in anything of nature bringing healing to the soul.

NEWS: POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Thursday 10/5/2023 will be our first field trip! This has been and will always be my favorite field trip of all time. I have done this specific trip 4 times. This will be my fifth. The students I taught previously speak so highly about it. It was the most memorable trip they ever had. It's not just going to Trader Joe's! It's going to a supermarket with your class, touring the supermarket with our guide (Mr. Nathan), shopping, and eating and playing with your friends. The students will get to go to the back of the store and even in the freezer! It is so cool for them! We will also enjoy the beautiful Rotary Play Garden and have a class feast together there! Volunteers can meet us at Trader Joe's at 11 a.m. inshallah! Please sign both forms and return them by Monday 10/2. Do not cut the form. Take a photo of it if needed. All details will be emailed out by Friday. Volunteers are needed. First come first serve.

Student-Centered Class! 9/20

Salam 3B Parents,

We started ELA centers. I am a strong believer in student-centered learning. I focus on 4 domains of reading in these centers ( grammar, phonics, comprehension, and vocabulary). And students LOVE centers too- more importantly, they have THE TIME needed to practice the skills we've explicitly taught! They are also learning independence and truly taking ownership of their learning. In grammar, we are working on Compound sentences and really had fun with it during group work. The students created a poster with different compound sentences. It was awesome to see them show kindness and empathy to one another while learning the necessary skills. We reviewed types of sentences using M&M's The students loved this project. They received a handful of M&M's and depending on the color had to write a type of sentence. Some students were so motivated by the yummy treat they wrote 12 sentences!

In math, we are almost done with Module 2 which is all about arrays and area. We will have our test on Tuesday, inshallah. I will send home the Module review for more practice.

In science, we are continuing the scientific method with our bouncy egg experiment. I will probably continue doing experiments and instilling the steps into them for the next two weeks. We will then move on to matter, mass, and weight. In Social Studies, we are finished learning about the continents and oceans. I am certain you've heard them singing the lyrics of the song we learned in class. We are now learning about the United States of America and the state abbreviations. They love listening to the States song here. The next step will be learning about our beautiful sunshiny state!

Shift your mindset! 9/11

Salam 3B Parents,

Thank you for sending in all the material for our Great Cookie Dunk! The students had a great time learning about buoyancy as they dropped cookies into their cold milk and watched to see if they would float or sink. Our next 2 Experiments will revolve around building a sturdy bridge and a bouncy egg! The challenge will be to build a bridge that can stretch from one desk to another using specific materials. The bouncy egg AKA the disappearing eggshell. The students are going to love this cool bouncy egg experiment! Children will be amazed by this egg experiment where they will literally dissolve the shell of a raw egg to create a bouncy egg.

We are learning that establishing the right mindset helps us achieve more in our classes and beyond. Sometimes you might hear your children say, "I can't do anything right," "I don’t want to try," or "This is stupid." It’s so hard to hear them say these things. The good news is that a child’s mindset can be changed. YOU CAN turn around their thinking to become "I'm going to try even if it's difficult," "I'm enough," and "I can do my best." This requires a shift in their perspective, the way they view themselves and their lives. Please encourage them to practice a growth mindset as we do in class. It has helped tremendously in reducing stress, promoting happiness, and encouraging intrinsic motivation to learn. I am really noticing a difference in them.

I am also going to start sending home monthly activities that the family can do together. This month, let's try to reduce screen time. I understand that technology is hardly avoidable in today's life—especially after Covid-19. It can be tempting to hand over the screen and let the kiddos zone out while you get some work done (or just need some quiet time). We want to allow the students to take ownership of their day (at least some parts of it) and select their own offline activities. I am sending home a Screen-Free Activities tear-off Poster to encourage interaction, creative thinking, problem-solving, and healthy brain development all while keeping your kiddos off screens. Please tape them to the fridge door or their bedroom door. Whenever you hear, "Mom/Dad, I am bored!", send them off to find and tear off an activity to do on their own or with a sibling.

In Math, we will start module 2 on Wednesday which involves area. We will have a math test tomorrow. I sent home the Review for you to go over with your child today. In SS, we will continue learning about the world map, and the map of the United States. We will start learning about the states and their abbreviations. In ELA, we are working on long and short i, compound sentences, theme, text evidence, and context clues. We will begin focusing on paragraph writing next week, inshallah.

Thanks! 9/5

Salam 3B Parents,

Thank you for coming to BTSN last week! It was awesome meeting you all. The students loved reading the notes you left on their desks or sent in. If you would ever like to send a letter of encouragement, feel free to email it to me and I will print it out and hand it to your child. It was sweet seeing them so happy reading your words. This week we worked on summarizing using a strategy called Somebody- Wanted- But- So- Then. You will get a graphic organizer for this skill next week for homework, inshallah. Homework will be minimal. It will include math from their workbook based on what we are taking, or if I feel they need to strengthen a certain skill, I will add a sheet for that skill instead. We may also include one comprehension sheet a week and a reading log. They will also be required to complete 20 minutes of i-ready per subject throughout the week.

We had our first assembly last Thursday. The Santa Clara Fire Department came to GIS and stressed the importance of fire safety. The students were encouraged to create and rehearse a dire escape plan and check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at home. They got the opportunity to go inside the fire truck and see everything a firefighter wears too!

We started buddy reading last week. I encourage them to read a page and summarize it in one sentence by asking each other "who" and "what" Then they have to summarize the page they read to their partner in one sentence to show understanding. We will start working on ABC order and context clues. In math, we are focusing on multiplication strategies. Mashallah, they are doing much better. It seems they are finally getting a grasp on it. Please encourage that at home as well. We are also doing Math drills daily to build stamina in fluency.

This week, we will be exploring buoyancy to teach the scientific method through our GREAT COOKIE DUNK EXPERIMENT! While most students are familiar with the phrase sink or float, they may not know the term buoyancy. This experiment enables students to explore why some things sink and other things float as they make observations and conduct an experiment.  “Are cookies buoyant?” and “Will they sink or float in milk?” We will answer these questions as we follow the steps of the scientific method. Thank you all for your cookie donations. In Social Studies, we continue working on map skills; continents, oceans, compass rose, cardinal directions, etc.

Have a great week!

Ms. Sophia

Important Reminders:

One week down! 8/23

Salam 3B Parents,

The first full week of school has been an absolute blast! We have been really learning a lot about one another. We have spent time creating a warm and caring environment. The biggest thing I try to create in our classroom is a nurturing classroom culture. I will continue doing morning meetings and community-building activities in our classroom because I truly believe if that is in place, learning flows smoothly, inshallah.

I hope you have already heard about "Saving Freddie." They had an amazing time trying to save my dad (a gummy worm) from being shipwrecked in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The students had to use their planning skills, a partner, and a lot of patience to save him from drowning! Alhamdaullah, he has transformed back into his human form and is safe and sound in Avon, Ohio :) We also started our first phonics sort. We work on phonics daily in 3B. The sounds of this week are long a and short a. Next week we will work on long o and short o. I will be assessing their reading and math skills in the next few days. We will also start learning about the scientific method by completing various experiments.

-Please review the Supply list and bring all items ASAP.  We will start the Curriculum on Monday-

If you have not joined the WhatsApp group please click the link to join. Thank you Sr. Safoora for taking on the role of 3B's Room parent this year! We will have Bulletin board volunteer opportunities coming up soon. I can't wait to meet you all on BTSN, inshallah!

Ms. Sophia
