Process for planning instruction:
1. Unpack the TEKS using: Know and Show, TEKS Breakdown, Proficiency Scale
a. Identify all the necessary knowledge and skills required for each TEK using the specificity.
b. Answer each of the questions from the Checkpoint related to this TEK, paying special attention to the strategies used to complete.
c. Identify all possible representations of the TEK.
d. Order and group the know and show to be taught for each day.
e. Create daily learning objectives based on the know and show to be taught.
2. Identify instructional and learning resources for the learning objectives.
3. Write daily formative assessments for each learning objective.
Transfer the planning into instruction:
1. Daily learning objective “We will”
2. Know and Show. Focused instruction
3. Formative assessment “I will” (“I will” example stems)
4. Use the know and show to develop focal points for aggressive monitoring.
Checklist for developing quality formative assessments:
· Short and sweet: 2-3 questions
· Aligned to the daily learning objective and upcoming checkpoint
· Assess what is most important
· Questions varied in format and level of rigor
