Reading

One of the most important things that students can do during this time is to read. We're recommending a target of at least 30 minutes a day of reading. For students with regular access to a computer, there are educational sites where you can find selected grade-appropriate articles for your child. But there are also plenty of options for reading that don't include logging in or looking at a screen. After they read, they can tell me and the class about it via email or the Google Classroom, or they can talk to you about it.

Epic -- Online educational resource with books to read. We have a classroom on Epic now: https://www.getepic.com/

Read the newspaper -- You can subscribe to The Recorder (413) 772-0261 or buy a paper at a convenience store or pick up a free newspaper (Valley Kids is a good example) around town

Little Libraries -- There are at least five Little Free Library locations in Greenfield. These have books for borrowing (you might want to take appropriate precautions about getting to them and wiping off book covers with disinfecting wipes or spray) for various ages.

  • Madison Circle
  • Davis Street (across the street from the tennis courts, near the High School)
  • Pierce Street, between Davis and Chapman
  • Main Street, near Baker's Office Supply
  • Beacon Field, near the playground on Sanderson St.
  • (If you know of any other locations email me and I'll add them here)

A Book Around the House -- Have a novel around the house that your kid might be interested in reading? Maybe they could read a chapter a day.

Audible Stories -- Audible, an online audiobook store, is offering streaming of a selection of audiobooks for free during the coronavirus break. There is a page for tweens with a selection of books that you can listen to. If you find one you like, tell me all about it! https://stories.audible.com/start-listen
