Math Resources for Adults:
Here are some resources if you're looking to do a deeper dive into how kids learn math in the early grades. It is important that students spend a lot of time using concrete manipulatives (coins, blocks, rods, pictures, etc.) in the early years so that they build a strong foundation in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers and fractions. As the Graham Fletcher, author of the videos below and math specialist, says "the turtle wins the race" - we want to avoid shortcuts as well as teaching students to memorize formulas. This type of learning takes time and patience.
- Learning Progression of Addition & Subtraction (Kindergarten through 4th Grade): By the time students get to the fifth grade math class they should have spent time developing a strong foundation in our number system - composing and decomposing numbers. This video from Graham Fletcher is a great resource for understanding how knowledge is built upon and used in the later grades. By short-cutting these learning opportunities (providing standard algorithms before students have time to use concrete manipulatives) many students are not able to develop a deep understanding of the concept.
- Learning Progression of Early Number & Counting (Kindergarten through 1st Grade):
- Learning Progression of Multiplication (2nd through 5th Grade):
- Learning Progression of Division (3rd through 6th Grade):
- Learning Progression of Fractions (1st through 5th Grade):
