How much energy does it take to melt an ice cube?
Grabbed a few ice cubes and added about 200mL of water to a 250mL graduated cylinder.
Carefully measure the initial volume of the water.
Pour the water into a stryofoam cup.
A digital thermometer was placed in the styrofoam cup. The initial temperature of the water was 18.8oC (hard to get from the graph below). Then, the ice cubes were added and the thermometer was used to stir the cup until all of the ice melted. The graph below is the result of the experiment.
The contents of the styrofoam cup were poured back into the graduated cylinder. What caused the increase in volume from before?
