Jorge O.
Jorge Ivan Ortiz was born on Thursday, Janurary 5th to a family that was already big: his older brother, Angel, his sister, Dulce, and his two loving parents. His parents both came from Mexico, but he was born in Houston, Texas. Nearly two years later, in September of 2013, his little brother Kevin was born. Later on, Jorge skipped kindergarten in Cloverleaf Elementary, and about 2 years later, he moved to Woodland Acres Elementary School in 3rd grade. Now, he’s in eighth grade in Woodland Acres Middle School, trying to do his best to succeed and get through middle school.
Jorge does not have many good talents, but he is pretty good at drawing. He sometimes draws in his free time when he’s bored or just feels like drawing. He is pretty good at drawing realism, but he prefers to draw cartoons. He also has a talent for music. He is currently enrolled in Wind Ensemble, which is the top musical band in his school. He plays the euphonium, an instrument not very well-recognized, but he likes it anyway. Some of his hobbies include playing video games and playing basketball on his patio with his little brother or his dad.
Though young, he has accomplished a surprising amount of things for a 13 year-old. One time, in 5th grade, he even won first place in a district art competition. Because of that, he won two hundred dollars as the prize money in fifth grade. He has also been in all advanced classes since 6th grade, he has been in the GT program since second grade, and been in Encounters since 6th grade. He also has never even missed a single day of school since he started Pre-K, though not many believe it. Also, he was the only one to make it to the regional band in his middle school, which is a big deal.
In the future, he does plan to keep the high road and try his best to keep his grades up. He also wants to graduate high school with the best grades possible and even hopes to be in at least the top 5%, to get better chances of scholarships and things like that. After high school, he wishes to get a good scholarship to a good college, and hopefully get an enjoyable, and money-making job. Overall, he just wants to have a good and fun life to be able to enjoy but prosper and succeed in his goals and dreams.
Not A Common Family
By Jorge Ortiz
I am from the silence of the neighboorhood street
and from the tall basketball hoop standing up high in the front patio.
I am from the racket of my family in the living room
and from our inherited messiness.
I am from the small but strong tree standing on the windiest days.
whose branches taught me to fall.
I am from the stacks of filled up drawing notebooks
and traditional Northern Mexican music.
I am from Jorge and Olga
and from the sweet bread my mom makes.
I am from those moments when I am extremely tired and I’m lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling.
