After The Shot Drops
By Randy Ribay
Today’s the day of the game. I trust that Nasir told Bunny to lose the game. On the other hand I know that Bunny wants to win this tournament. I have no other choice but to go to the watch party, so I get in my car, and I start driving over there. When I entered the party, two guys came up to me. One is tall and black; the other one is also tall, but Asian. The black dude said “Aye you better have our money tonight.” The Asian man backed him up and said “Yeah Wallace. You in a lot of debt right now.” I eventually got tired of this conversation and said “Aight man whatever.” After I ended the conversation I went to the fridge, and I got myself a beer. After I got my beer I sat down on the couch to watch the game. As I wait for the game to start I text Nasir. “Wallace: Did you tell him? Nasir: Yeah. Wallace: Alright thanks man. I owe you big time. Nasir: You already know man. I just feel bad for Bunny though. Wallace: Don’t be. He don’t deserve it anyway. After he betrayed you like that. Nasir: Alright man. Talk to you later. Wallace: Alright man.”
After our conversation the game starts. At the beginning Bunny starts to score a bunch of points, but I start to notice that he’s not doing as good as his last game, so I’m more confident now. The first quarter just ended, and St. Sebastian (Bunny’s school) is down by 2.
The second quarter starts and St. Sebastian’s center hits a three putting them up by one. Throughout the game the two teams continue to score causing the game to be very close between the two teams.
The second quarter ends with the score being 43-47 with St. Sebastian being down by 4. As halftime begins I start to get nasty looks from several people from people I owe money to. The third quarter begins, and Bunny is subbed out. St. Sebastian starts off strong with an and one play, so their small forward goes up to the free throw line, and he sinks it bringing them down by 1. The other team gets the ball, and they drive for a layup, but it’s rejected by St. Sebastian’s center, and he gets the ball back to drive to the other side of the court, and he slams it down. St. Sebastian and the other team go at it, and the final score of the third quarter is 69-65 with St. Sebastian being up by 4.
Before the fourth quarter starts I text bunny “Wallace: Yo Bunny what’s going on with ya mans? I thought you told Bunny to sell the game. Nasir: Aye listen man I got it all under control. Wallace: Aight man you better.” The fourth quarter begins, and the other school gets off to a good start with a few three pointers and some nasty layups, and this puts them up by 7 with the score being 79-72, and there’s two minutes left. Bunny has the ball, and he goes for a three, and he makes it, but he also gets fouled, so he’s going to go up to the free throw line for one shot, and he makes it, so St. Sebastian’s now only down by 3. St. Sebastian and the other team go at it like their lifes depend on it, and there’s 10 seconds left with the score being 81-82, and it’s St. Sebastian’s ball. The play starts with St. Sebastian’s power forward passing the ball to Bunny, and with 3 seconds left he passes it to the center who goes the layup, and the buzzer goes off, and the ball bounces on the rim, and it finally goes in. St. Sebastian won. Now I’m in more debt. Everybody’s asking me for the money, and I tell them that I don’t have it, so they start beating me up, and they steal my wallet, and they kick me out, so I get in my car, and I drive to the gas station, and I buy a beer with the ten dollar bill I found in my pocket, and I get in my car. I take a swig of my beer, get my gun from the glove box, and I start the car. Now it’s time to go pay Bunny and Nasir a visit.
