The goals of the CSA grant is to:
Provide teacher professional development in Code.org’s Computer Science A (CSA) curriculum
Have teachers prepared to implement CSA in the fall of 2022
Provide ongoing support and professional learning during the school year
Spread awareness of high school computer science standards
Code.org’s Computer Science A (CSA) introduces students to software engineering and object-oriented design while learning the Java programming language. The Code.org CSA curriculum is recommended for any high school student who wishes to continue their computer science education after completing an introductory course, such as Computer Science Principles (CSP).This training will also help teachers prepare students to take the AP CSA exam.
The Professional Learning Program is designed to support in-service teachers to implement the curriculum and prioritizes computer science for all students. CSA curricula have traditionally been focused on the building blocks required to design solutions to problems through programming. Creating this new curriculum with equity in mind means reimagining the structure and pedagogy to excite and inspire students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and young women while teaching the technical building blocks and preparing students for the AP® exam.
For participating teachers, we require the following commitments:
Attend a virtual, half day CSTA Standards for Computer Science Teachers Workshop.
Complete 20 hours of asynchronous onboarding to Code.org curriculum structures & pedagogies completed prior to July 18th 2022.
Attend a five-day, summer workshop July 18th - 22nd in Ames, Iowa.
Attend 8, 1/2-day workshops spread throughout the 2022-23 school year for implementing teachers. Teachers will collaborate with colleagues and plan for continued implementation.
Attend a 2-day capstone workshop to collaborate with colleagues, reflect, and plan for continued implementation of CSA in the 2023-24 school year.
Teach the course in the 2022–23 school year.
Participants who complete the professional development will receive stipends at $20/hour or $160/day for 13.5 days of professional development. Participants who attend all 13.5 days of professional development will be awarded $2160 in stipends.
Participants can choose to use part of their stipend to earn three licensure renewal or graduate credits for participating in the workshop and completing assignments for an additional cost to the participant. More information will be available during the workshop.
