Hi. My name is Paula. I've spent the last 25 years being a mama to five beautiful souls, and before that I trained in Montessori and looked after children under 5.
A rebel at heart with a strong sense of justice, I'm no stranger to making bold decisions in my own parenting journey. After my first very disempowering birth, I went on to have four more that happened on my own terms so I know from bitter experience how it feels to make choices from fear or lack of better information, and equally, how it can change your life to stand more firmly and more rooted in your own power and intuition.
But how did my journey begin? Well, training as a doula back in 2011 was a very easy decision and logical progression for me, since this was loosely what I was already doing for friends and family anyway. I had been the go-to mama for friends parenting questions for a few years already and had supported at a couple of births so the training was just a step into a more formal way of owning the label of doula. To be honest I still get asked parenting questions all the time - my inbox is overflowing with such messagesand that is an honour and responsibility I don't take lightly. I love being a sounding board, helping parents find out their own answers. And watching families grow and evolve beyond the birthing year is a privilege I sometimes get to enjoy too!
But why do this work, specifically? Honestly, for me, it feels like a calling, not a job. I trained as a doula to help women like you make decisions from a truly informed place. To give you the continuity you crave and deserve against the backdrop of an NHS maternity system framework of care that can sometimes feel disjointed, inconsistent, confusing, contradictory, lonely and bewildering. (Even if some staff are absolutely wonderful, lovely, skilled human beings.... not all are always on your page, or even singing from the same hymn sheet as each other). I try to build that bridge so you can access the very best care possible that fits your needs and wishes.
If I can help families to navigate how to access the aspects of care they strongly believe and feel they want and need, while advocating for them to understand what they are allowed to refuse and decline, I am a happy woman! No matter what is unfolding, I will always seek ways to help as much magic, love and laughter to flow as possible. With a smile and a hug, I will help you dig deep and do the hardest thing you've probably ever done, and feel as confident and informed as you can on that journey. Before, during and after birth, I love that feeling of helping mothers and families feel truly held. And speaking of holding - I am trained in some pregnancy & birth-specific Shiatsu skills and also in the use of a Mexican Rebozo to help bring ease, comfort and relieve stress.
Passionate about birthing rights full stop, I have been a founding member of two movements to that aim - Birthplace Matters, (restoring home birth services for families in Kings Lynn) between 2015-2018 and March With Midwives (A national campaign that I was involved in starting and attending events between 2023-24). I am proud to be a voice speaking for women and birthing people, and have made contributions to improve maternity care within the context of providing material to be included in compulsory NHS training for staff, and also taking part in training to foster better understanding of the needs of survivors of sexual abuse and assault.
When I'm not supporting families in a myriad of ways, you will find me hanging out with my beloved husband pottering around the garden, or in the yurt, doing things with my kids, crocheting, making or teaching macrame, travelling around in my camper on adventures, writing poetry, gardening, or speaking up for mothers rights as a campaigner.
I will never tire of standing up for the right of women and birthing people to do things their way. It's a wild ride becoming parents, and noone knows this more than me. It would be my pleasure and honour to help you to find steadiness, strength and grace through the ups and downs of this beautiful and sometimes unpredictable journey into parenthood.
I'm here for it all ❤️
