To apply for a visa, new F-1 and J-1 students and scholars will first need to obtain an I-20 or DS-2019 from a university. Please check with the U.S. Consulate near you for the most up-to-date application procedures and requirements.
The dependents of F-1 and J-1 students can apply for F-2 and J-2 Visa. However, these Visa does not grant work benefits to the dependents.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT): CPT is a type of off-campus employment authorization for F-1 students who must complete an internship course in order to graduate from their current degree program.
Occupational Practical Training (OPT): OPT provides work benefit opportunity that allows students to gain off-campus work experience and is requested to be used after the completion of a degree program. There are Pre-OPT and Post-OPT, separating by the completion of your degree.
OPT Extension (STEM): In May, 2016, OPT Extension is extended from 17 months to 24 months for students study in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). STEM extends the OPT beyond the normal 12 months. This gives students who do not get selected in the H-1B lottery another one to two chances to participate in H-1B lottery again.
Cap-Gap: Cap-Gap is the time between the end of a student’s OPT period and the beginning of H-1B status for students’ whose employers have filed cap-subject H-1B petitions for them. It is an automatic extension of OPT work authorization and duration of status for all F-1 students who are unauthorized for Post-OPT or STEM OPT extension.
