What is MIDDLE SOUND IDENTIFICATION?
MIDDLE SOUND IDENTIFICATION is your child’s ability to hear and say the sound in the middle of a word. Middle sound identification is harder than identification of sounds at the beginning or end of words.
What does MIDDLE SOUND IDENTIFICATION have to do with READING?
Eventually, students will learn which letters pairs with sounds (even though our focus is only sounds right now). This sound identification is a first step towards accurate writing/spelling.
What can I do at home?
Point out words and their middle sounds. (“Boat, that has an “O” sound in the middle, b-O-t”)
Point out words with the same middle sounds (“Hey, there’s an “O” in the middle of “phone” too!, f-O-n”)

Not all words have a sound that is directly in the middle. Longer words or words that start and end with consonant blends (e.g. FR, ST) will have a vowel sound, but it won’t always be directly in the middle. You can still work on finding sounds in these words (e.g. f-r-O-g has the “aww” sound as its vowel).
*FUN TIP* Draw attention to middle sounds with an action! A hand in the air as you say the middle sound, or even squishing Play-Doh when you emphasize these sounds can be a fun activity to do together!
Sing to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”
Polar Bear,
