Children need specific teaching to learn to use symbolic systems or AAC – just like learning any new “language” they need to see and hear other people modelling the types of messages they could send and the different reasons they can send them. We need to “talk” AAC in order to “teach” AAC. This video talks about using a communication board to help your child learn to communicate, but the same strategies can be used for different communication systems: (picture symbols, core vocabulary boards, speech generating devices, iPad apps or “talkers”).
