Top Three Reasons to Study Music at SDCI
Studying music is one of the best skill building activities available. By performing music regularly, we build confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment with the little gains that we experience each and every day. As a performing art, music encourages expressive and creative thinking as well as communication skills in a language that is universal to all. Our musicians develop great friendships and make many memories over a common bond, providing them with the socialization that is such an important part of the high school experience.
Learning to sing or play an instrument requires you to use both sides of your brain. This process improves memory, spatial reasoning and all forms of communication. It takes time and effort which builds discipline and time-management skills. Most of all, we learn patience. Students who excel in music also tend to have better averages for post-secondary applications, as our senior courses are offered at the M level and can be put towards that average.
Performing music is a fantastic stress reliever and provides an outlet for leisure. By taking one of our instructional courses, you will develop the skills necessary to join our ensembles. The Music department offers the most consistent extracurriculars in the school and provides the most variety next to athletics. Instead of trying to pack your all of your fun into a few short weeks, our ensemble season is from September to June. Each ensemble rehearses once a week for the entire school year and our musicians grow to love this manageable and consistent schedule.
Testimonials
“Choosing to be a part of SDCI’s music program enhanced my high school experience by allowing me to improve my knowledge of music, meet new people, and most importantly, have so much fun! I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this amazing program!”
-Olivia, Grade 12
“Coming into high school, I had absolutely no prior musical experience. My elementary school was very small and did not have a music program. The music program at SDCI did a fantastic job of helping me get to the same playing level as the other students. If you are considering taking music in highschool, but are worried about not having enough background knowledge, you should definitely go for it!”
