Math Homework Patterning #3

Patterns in Grade 4

Check out the problem below and different ways we solved it. We're using patterns to help us solve problems.

These kids made a table to show the pattern and solve the problem.

Using tiles as a concrete tool to help see the pattern. The "core" of the pattern (two shirts, 3 squishies was broken up using the tiles)

This student showed his thinking using a chart. He had to think hard about how to organize and label it.

These students first modeled the problem using tiles (blue represents t-shirts and red represents the squishies).

After modeling with the tiles, they made a chart to show the pattern and amount of t-shirts and squishies.

Another use of tiles and then drawings to show their thinking

Growing Patterns

This was the pattern given to students in a Math Talk.

Students are learning how to use a table/chart to keep track of how a pattern changes and to make predictions.

We are working on communicating our thinking clearly in math and used our co-created success criteria to give this student some feedback (in blue). Labeling work is important so the reader can understand it better. Through the use of a table we can also make predictions. Notice how this child went to the 10th term!

In this problem students had to find out how many tables (the squares) are need to seat 30 people if tables are pushed up into one long row. Building or drawing the pattern is a good way to see the pattern.

Making a table is an efficient way to see a pattern and keep track of it.
