Ontario Curriculum:
We will be implementing the Grade 3 Provincial Curriculum as specified in our teaching guides. These guides are available at school and on the Ministry of Education and Training websites. The Ministry also released a new math curriculum for 2020-2021 which can be found here. There is also a new science curriculum that was released this past summer and will be implemented this year. That can be found here. Finally, there is a new language curriculum that will be implemented this year (we are still learning this as it is quite a large document) that can be found here.
To give you a better idea of how our days are organized, please visit our 10 Day Cycle Timetable, which your child will be following throughout the year. Please note that other teachers will be responsible for delivering certain subjects to the students during the 10-day cycle (Health, Dance, Music, Drama, Media and Social Studies).
Assessment and evaluation will look much different this year. There may be a shift to more of a documentation (photo) assessment. I am still trying to obtain guidelines for this.
There are four levels of achievement used when assessing a student’s level of understanding and performance and are reflected on the Provincial Report Card. Please read the descriptors carefully and note the difference in the modifiers used (i.e., always, usually, sometimes, rarely).
Level 4 (A - to A+): Achievement exceeds the provincial standard.
The student demonstrates the required skills. He/she independently and consistently applies relevant skills, extends the concepts being taught, successfully takes on additional challenges and exhibits higher level thinking skills. Work is clear, accurate and precise.
Level 3 (B- to B+): Achievement meets the provincial standard.
The student demonstrates most of the knowledge and skills. He/she usually understands and applies skills and concepts in a variety of contexts and infrequent teacher prompts, as well as support is needed. Work is completed on time, with care and contains few errors.
Level 2 (C- to C+): Achievement approaches the provincial standard.
The student demonstrates some of the required skills and knowledge. He/she demonstrates some understanding of the concepts taught, but requires occasional teacher prompts, as well as support to apply relevant skills. Work contains some errors and/or omissions.
Level 1 (D- to D+): Achievement falls below the provincial standard.
Extensive remediation is required. The student demonstrates little understanding of concepts and rarely applies relevant skills. Frequent teacher prompts and considerable support is needed. Work contains many errors and/or omissions.
