Math in grade 3 is about building upon the foundations built in grade 1 and 2. Below, you will find a calendar that outlines what I hope to cover and when. I hope this calendar will help you to keep track of what your child is learning throughout the school year. However, please keep in mind that it might not always be possible to stick to this calendar exactly, but it should give you an idea of what to expect. 

The calendar is broken up into blocks of time, some longer than others, in which we will explore certain math ideas. The math ideas to be explored are listed in each block. In the new curriculum, there are 6 strands: A. Social-Emotional Learning Skills in Mathematics and the Mathematical Process, B. Number, C. Algebra, D. Data, E. Spatial Sense and F. Financial Literacy. 

The Social-Emotional Strand as well as the expectations laid out in the Mathematical Process section are things that are addressed every math class. These are things we discuss and work through with every math "cycle".  As such, I have not listed them specifically. 

You will find that some school days are not covered by a colour block. These are days built into our schedule to account for school interruptions, field trips, special events or if students need some extra time to explore a concept. 

In addition to the 6 strands, you will notice that some expectations are repeated and repeated within different blocks. This is to allow students multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning throughout the year. Just because the student might not have a certain concept yet, does not mean they will not understand later. Using this calendar, we hope to explore concepts multiple times and in many different combinations to maximize the students’ opportunities to demonstrate learning. As much as possible, we mix the strands to provide students opportunities to use as many different skills together as possible.
