Classroom Information

Organizational Tools

Due to the current circumstances, paper agendas will be unavailable this year. In order to help your child with organization, we will be keeping up to date with our classroom calendar (found on the class website and in Google Classroom). I will be sending a weekly email to families with important information for the week. This information can also be found on the class website under “Weekly News”. Additionally, if your child would like to bring their own paper agenda, they are welcome to.

Here is our daily schedule:

Additional Information:

Supplies

Students will need to come prepared with their own supplies this year, as items can not be shared.

It is recommended that they have:

  • A binder (preferably non-zippered) with subject tabs

  • A pencil case (to keep personal pencils, markers, etc.)

  • A calculator

  • A math set

  • A reusable water bottle

  • A personal supply of kleenex

Homework

Homework will be used as a time for students to finish incomplete work from class, prepare for upcoming classroom learning, complete interactive activities with family members, play games, review concepts, and read.

Ongoing “homework” this year relates to improving your child’s understanding of French texts (written and oral), as well as increasing their French writing abilities. I strongly encourage students to complete 30 minutes a week of French practice using the links provided on the class website. This will not be directly assessed, but the growth will be evident if they are completing these tasks.

I strongly believe in encouraging students to read a variety of texts (books, articles, magazines, comics) in both French and English. This reading should be done for pleasure on genres/topics of interest.

It is expected that students read nightly for 20 minutes with at least three days a week in French. Students will have projects throughout the year to work on at home that focuses on reading including book talks (Eng. & Fr.) and article talks.

Technology

Technology at West Oaks will look a little different this year as a result of devices being deployed for the Full Remote Learning Program. We will continue to provide access to technology for those who need it, however, we encourage students to bring their own devices whenever possible for in-class use.

West Oaks follows a BYOD/PED (Personal Electronic Device) policy. Devices are not to be used during breaks and are used solely for educational purposes, otherwise privileges may be revoked. Students who partake in BYOD MUST have the parent permission survey completed. The policy and survey are available here: West Oaks BYOD

Students will use the technology available to them throughout the year to expand their knowledge of technology and how it can be used constructively in our daily lives. Students will continue to use Google Drive and Google Classroom daily for organization and to submit their assignments.
