DELF at Laurier

Laurier's French language instruction is informed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) which defines official levels of language proficiency. In May of 2025, Laurier's Grade 12 French Immersion students have the opportunity to take an internationally-recognized language exam called the Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF) based on the CEFRL levels.

WHAT IS DELF? The DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française) is an official international certification awarded by the French Ministry of Education indicating the level of proficiency of candidates from outside France in the French language. The results of these exams are valid indefinitely. The DELF exam certificate officially recognizes a student’s level of proficiency in French measured across four categories: speaking, writing, listening and reading. In 2024, 50 Laurier French Immersion students were awarded the DELF B2 exam certificate. The recipients of the DELF B2 Certificate are considered to be advanced independent users of the French language.

In 2024, 30 Laurier French Immersion students were awarded the DELF B1 Certificate. The recipients of the DELF B1 Certificate are considered to be independent users of the French language.

CEFR Levels

The DELF is based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which defines language proficiency along six global levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, (C1, and C2 for professionals).  Laurier Grade 12 French Immersion students successfully challenged either the B2 or B1 levels.
