FAQs
Q. My dog ate my homework. Can I hand it in tomorrow?
A. Hmmm. Here's what I can do. I'll mark down a zero for now, and when you hand me the assignment I'll grade it and change your mark. You might want to take a minute to update your planner to include this 'missing' assignment.
Q. I forgot my gym shoes. Can I go to the office to call home?
A. Hmmm. It was your responsibility to remember your things. Make a note in your planner to remember your shoes next class. Oh, and you might want to take a minute to think about our classroom agreement to have all your supplies ready when you need them.
Q. Can I get a drink of water?
A. Of course. You can fill your water bottle up at the Hall Filling Station during our assigned times. Our Filling stations are filtered and pre-chilled. Isn't that grand?
Q. May I go to the washroom?
A. Of course. go quickly, and wash your hands. Take a hall pass with you please.
Q. Can I go see Madame about my other assignment?
A. Certainly -- after school or at recess. However, at the moment, you're in my class, and here you will stay. Tee hee.
Q. Can I go see my friend Johnny about something? It's important.
A. Oh dear. Unfortunately, my class is important too, and so is the one that Johnny is in right now. You'll have to solve your problem after school or at recess. Thank you for understanding.
Q. I'm done. What should I do now?
A. Finish other un-done work, review what you’ve done today, study, or read. Do not talk with a neighbour, wander the room, pester others, or bring negativity to our classroom. Be productive. Be positive. Be proactive. Function. :)
Q. My Mom said I could hand in my assignment tomorrow since I was sick.
A. Well, that's not entirely true. I believe what your Mom said was that you could ask permission for an extension, since you were sick. However, all of our tasks and supporting documents are posted online, so why don't you show me what you did get completed, and then we'll chat about when you need to be finished the remainder.
Q. Do I have to show my work (in math)?
A. Of course. The study of Mathematics is not just about getting answers, it's about learning to think through problems in a very specific way, and the steps we teach you now are the basis for all the math you'll be doing for the next few years. You must show your work. Correct answers only results in a level 1. You will be assessed on Knowledge, Thinking, Communication & Application equally.
Q. Why does spelling count? This is an Art assignment.
A. Ah, but effective communication in English requires correct mechanics -- no matter what the topic. Make an effort for the clearest communication possible, in every subject. How well you communicate affects how you are perceived by the world.
Q. Dad said I don't have to write the test today since I've been sick.
A. Well, all the class notes and review notes were posted on the web, so you had all the material available to you while you were at home. You've obviously been keeping up with the 70-80 minutes each night I've been recommending all year, so it's not as if anything on the test will be unfamiliar. :) Why don't you take the test today, and I'll excuse any sections that by some small chance aren't represented in the on-line notes.
