Self Guided lesson planning ideas for Teachers
Overall Expectation #1 (grade 1 - 12) -To relate Science and Technology to Society and the Environment. (The relationship between Science Technology, Society & the Environment).
We see the first overall expectation as the 'why' to studying the unit. When we select a provocation that is a current event our students are motivated to do something as a result of what they have learned.
For Example - Grade 5 Understanding Structures and Mechanisms OE#1 - analyse social and environmental impacts of forces acting on structures and mechanisms. (ideas that come to mind - tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami, erosion, flooding) I would look for an image that has a structure that been damaged by one of the events. I like images that challenge our thinking, or make the observer want to have a second look.
Our first day might be observe & infer as a class. The second day with the image might include the Question Formulation Technique OR a video or reading (newspaper article, book etc) with more information to help guide students followed by the Question Formulation Technique (now that I know, I need understand...).
Grade 9 Science - Chemistry
When making observations and inferences, and while designing my own questions, I can: formulate scientific questions about observed relationships, ideas, problems, and/or issues, make predictions, and/or formulate hypotheses to focus inquiries or
research (A1.1)
use appropriate terminology related to atoms, elements, and compounds(C2.1)
assess the usefulness of and/or the hazards associated with common elements or compounds in terms of their physical and chemical properties(C1.1)
Grade 8 - Water Systems
Grade 9 - Geography
Grade 9 - Sustainable Ecosystems
Grade 10 - Climate Change
