Our construction plan includes the removal of several trees from Governor Mifflin's campus. The plan may be viewed by clicking the photo on the left hand side.
While the removal of trees is never pleasant to see, and the choice to do so was not an easy decision to come to, this was deemed necessary to advance the construction responsibly and for the safety of our staff, students, and community. These trees were removed from campus for the following reasons:
The trees at the perimeter of the existing student parking lot were removed to enable the proposed changes in traffic flow and to incorporate storm water infrastructure.
The modular building and trees will be removed to incorporate the change in traffic pattern and the expansion of the parking area. Storm water infrastructure is planned to manage the storm water for the area. This includes the installation of a storm water basin at the location of the tree area
The tree located along Waverly St. near the site of the future GMACC was removed to install a subsurface stormwater infiltration bed
In addition to the trees shown in these diagrams, Governor Mifflin School District opted to remove trees in two additional areas for unrelated reasons.
The tree at the rear corner of the high school student lot was removed due to a split in the trunk, making it unsafe.
The trees between the middle school and Education Center were removed due to safety and security precautions.
Governor Mifflin School District pledges to replace all trees which are removed during the construction process at a minimum of a 1:1 ratio, meaning every tree which is taken down will be replaced with a new tree during or upon completion of the project. Currently, we have identified 30 trees to be planted on our campus post-construction. In addition to replacing our trees, we will also be planting rain gardens, which will not only ease the load on storm drains during periods of heavy rainfall but also will bring additional native greenery to our grounds.
