Construction Plan

Costly Repairs

In 2017, the Governor Mifflin School Board hired The Schrader Group to do a comprehensive evaluation of our secondary campus, which includes Governor Mifflin High School, Governor Mifflin Middle School, Governor Mifflin Stadium, and the Education Center. In November 2017, a team of architects from The Schrader Group toured the secondary campus. They evaluated the buildings and structures from the perspective of what upgrades will be required to continue use of each facility in its current state for the next ten or more years. Their recommendations were received in January 2018 and provide a snapshot of recommendations for code, systems, and finish updates. The estimated total cost for necessary renovations to bring buildings up to code and replace aging mechanical systems was approximately $40 million. The vast majority of that cost would be unseen in the form of "behind-the-walls" upgrades to mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems and would provide little to no improvement to the buildings to promote and enhance modern day educational programming.

An opportunity to reimagine

Facing $40 million in required repairs, in 2018, the School Board approved moving forward with additional phases of a facilities study to further evaluate the buildings with goals of providing additional recommendations to help enhance the current and future learning environment. A group of community members was formed, including Governor Mifflin teachers, parents, staff, retirees, administrators, municipal and business leaders, to provide feedback and help flesh out ideas that were reflective of key priorities of key stakeholders throughout the district.

Several options were developed that ranged from building large additions on existing buildings to razing structures and building new. The plan that was deemed the most efficient, both fiscally and in its ability to repurpose space in existing schools, is a plan to capture the largest spaces within the schools (gymnasiums, cafeterias, and outdated large group instruction/community gathering areas). To do this, final planning detailed below includes building a multi-use community center to allow for the modernization of school buildings through redevelopment of large spaces and rearranging of classroom space to help promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and career development while also supporting the demand for arts programs.
