The high school does not currently have a space that can accommodate the full student body. As a result, there are no assemblies and student activities, like dances, Mini-Thon, prom are held off campus or on the elementary campus.
The high school main gymnasium is approximately 8,000 square feet of space, but cannot hold the full student body and faculty, even if chairs are brought into fill the floor. Likewise, the auxiliary gymnasium is approximately 7,300 square feet and has a maximum capacity that's even smaller than the main gym. The limited bleacher seating in both of these gymnasiums are also too small to host varsity sporting events. These large portions of the current building are therefore used for gym classes during the day, but do not meet the full potential for meeting the contemporary need for athletic or gathering space.
The middle school faces similar issues. In that building, the gym is not large enough to hold the student body, but is in constant use for gym classes. The building lacks a large group area for events, grade-level meetings, assemblies, and events.
Over the past several years, the student-led Mustang Nation initiative has been developed to help encourage a sense of greater pride and belonging within the district. This has resulted in a significant increase of demand for tickets to school events. The addition of the new Community Center will provide a space adjacent to the high school and middle school where students can gather for events and assemblies and strengthen their shared sense of community and school pride.
