Governor Mifflin's music program has a longstanding tradition of excellence and has garnered a reputation as a premier program in the region, and receiving the national recognition of a NAMM Foundation Best Community for Music Education as a “Best Community for Music Education” every year since 2013.
While the continued growth of the music program is a point of pride, the department has long since outgrown the allotted space in both the high school and middle school. Rehearsal spaces cannot accommodate full ensembles and are often shared among multiple music groups and other school activities. Due to size constraints, some ensembles must rehearse in spaces that are not conducive to music making and learning. Storage space for instruments, risers, and other supplies is at a premium. All of this makes scheduling rehearsals, classes, and extra-curricular events challenging.
The new facilities will help the music department expand curricular offerings and capacity for music electives such as Music Production through Technology, Music Theory, Music History, and Keyboard. It will also allow students and staff to spend more time making music and less time moving chairs, stands, risers, instruments, and folders. The Music and Theater departments will be able to spend more time creating and collaborating and less time negotiating over stage time and classroom/storage space. All of this means a premier music education for the students of Governor Mifflin.
