The high school has two gymnasiums, both of which are too small to host varsity sports competitions and cannot accommodate the full student body. Gym spaces and locker rooms are part of the original construction of the building. Likewise, the middle school gym is not large enough to host junior high sporting events.
As part of the construction effort to recapture this valuable space within the both schools, gym and health programming will be moved to a new Community Center that will be built in between Governor Mifflin High School and Middle School. The facility will offer additional resources and space for a modern health and physical education curriculum that includes courses like Yoga and Meditation, Strength, and Principals of Coaching and Officiating.
The new Community Center building will not only provide a shared and updated space for health and physical activities during the school day, but the building will return varsity, junior varsity, and junior high school sports to the secondary campus. Community members will also be able to easily access facilities, like the weight room, indoor track, and classroom areas that can host meetings or outside fitness activities.
Based on demand for current athletic facilities, including youth sports, the numbers below show an estimated use for athletic activities in the new Community Center (this does not include health and PE classes):
Interscholastic games/year: 160
Interscholastic practices/year: 1200 practices/2400 hours
Interscholastic teams use of the wrestling room/ year: 475 hours
Interscholastic teams use of the weight room/year: 550 hours
Multi-purpose room use/year: 550 hours
Youth Sports use of gyms/wrestling room/year: 400 hours
