Fifth Grade

how we learn best

At the beginning of the year, we learn about our learning styles and different intelligence types. Our goal is for students to understand how they learn best and learn different strategies to help them be successful in the future. We also create inspirational quote posters while learning about the 4 divergent thinking skills. We focus on the divergent thinking skills throughout the school year.

our brain

After learning about how we learn, we look at how our brains work on a cellular level. We study our brains through the lens of a medical student studying neurology. Their goal is to study how the brain works in order to create an antidote to save the world from the zombie apocalypse. Students also have to present their antidote to the class in a creative way such as a commercial or song. We end our brain unit with a dissection of a sheep's brain.

Independent research project

In the spring students work on their independent research project. They choose a topic they want to research and generate questions about that topic. They use their research to create various products to teach the audience about their topic. They use tri-fold boards to show their learning to peers, teachers, and parents. This project is often multimedia with a variety of different mediums used to create products.
