Science 1 - Earth & Space Science Syllabus

Teacher: Phil Moorhouse (pmoorhouse@goddardusd.com)

Overview:

Science 1 will be based on a study of Earth and Space Science focused on the study of the physical setting of the earth and the universe. We will start our year investigating the universe and solar system. We will then move on to earth systems, including freshwater, weather, the oceans, rocks and minerals, the geologic history of earth and natural resources. As we go through the year the overarching theme will be how to “think like a scientist” and how to use various scientific tools.

How can your student succeed?

·       Attendance is crucial. We learn new information every day. The student is responsible for making up all work missed unless specifically excused by Mr. Moorhouse.  We will follow the school policy on both absences and tardies.

·       Show up for class on time with all materials ready to begin by the time the bell rings.

·       Respect EVERYONE in the class.

·   Cell phones will not be used in class.  The new Kansas legislation has addressed that cell phones will not be available at any time during class unless there is a specific exception for medical or IEP purposes. This exception must be on file in the office.

·       Parents, please make sure your contact information is correct and current.  If I, or another school employee, cannot reach you we cannot inform you of any compliments or concerns.

Homework:

*  I do not assign very much homework – most work is done in class. However, if a student does not complete the assignment in the time given, he or she is required to take that work home, complete it and return it by the next class period.

*  Students will receive projects over Winter and Spring Break which must be turned in when they return to school.
