"With Science in Mind" is an outreach engagement project funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) that addresses the psychology of misinformation, focusing on the cognitive processes involved in acquiring, spreading and retaining false beliefs, as well as the most effective strategies to combat them. The project also aims to debunk common myths in psychology and neuroscience that lack scientific support.
To achieve this, the project implements:
Interactive activities and workshops designed for students.
Tailored sessions for key professional groups, including NGOs, journalists and teachers.
Online content, media campaigns and practical resources such as informative toolkits and guides.
Participation in public outreach activities, fairs and dissemination events.
CIMCYC and Newtral, the Spanish fact-checking media outlet, joined forces to develop a science-based journalistic investigation into the psychological mechanisms underlying the dissemination of disinformation on digital platforms related to the Torre Pacheco incidents.
The project, titled "The Psychology of Disinformation: How Cognitive Biases and Algorithms Fuel Digital Manipulation," was selected as one of 24 winning projects in the European Journalism Centre and University NOVA from Lisboa's "Journalism Science Alliance" program.
The study identifies a structural "rhetorical package"—group identity, distortion, unjustified causal inferences and emotional charge—that is repeated in an almost inseparable manner. The results were published in a news article titled “The Psychology of Viral Disinformation: Decoding the Rhetorical Package of Hate.”
