Mind, Brain and Behavior Research Center (CIMCYC)
Misinformation affects how people understand science, health, politics and many other aspects of society. Unfortunately, misleading or false contents can exploit our attention, emotions, prior beliefs and reasoning, identities and reliance on social cues.
This collaborative project brings together researchers from cognitive, experimental, social, developmental and educational psychology, alongside specialists in science communication. We investigate why people accept or share misleading information and translate this knowledge into evidence-based interventions for adults and adolescents.
We combine cognitive, social, developmental and educational psychology with intervention science, digital-behavior research and science outreach.
Human Cognition
We examine how attention, memory, cognitive reflection and many other mental functions influence the evaluation of true, false and misleading information.
Social and Motivational Factors
We investigate how emotions, identities, political attitudes, reasoning and prior beliefs affect perceived credibility and engagement. This component also examines whether interventions can reduce the preferential acceptance of belief-congruent information.
Intervention Science and Learning
We design and compare interventions combining technique-based inoculation, media and digital literacy, friction, accuracy prompts and later boosters. The project evaluates which components improve truth discernment, promote critical-thinking skills and support long-term retention and transfer.
Outreach and Public Engagement
In collaboration with the Science Park of Granada and other outreach entities, we aim to translate research findings into accessible educational experiences. This component connects key psychological research with the wider society.
