Understanding the molecular signatures through spectroscopic measurement

When molecules are irradiated with laser light, light with a slightly different wavelength is observed due to the interaction between the light and molecular vibrations. The pattern of this wavelength spectrum differs depending on the chemical structure of each molecule. By reading this molecular fingerprint-like signature, molecules can be distinguished even when they show no visible difference in color. This technique can be used not only to analyze the components of living cells and biological tissues while keeping them alive, but also to detect small drug molecules dissolved in biological systems.
