My classroom will be a safe learning environment because I intend to do everything in my power to create a comfortable, free-thinking space where students can feel free to be themselves. If that means providing a helping hand or making sure some kids receive additional instruction I would without a doubt make the time to hear individuals out. Being a social studies teacher it is important to shine light on all cultures and their influence over not only the world around us but history as well. Inclusivity is of utmost importance when trying to make a supportive learning environment. Through day-to-day banter I assume I will get to know students quickly, additionally, I would like to ask about their interests on the first day of school just to get a better idea of the personality in the room. During the first 21 days, my main focus will be establishing a routine and setting precedence of the power dynamic between the student and the teacher. At the beginning of the term, I will lean towards a zero-tolerance policy to ensure the rest of the year will run smoothly because I believe in avoiding problems before they arise. As far as parental communication I will maintain strict professionalism and keep clear accounts of each child's performance in my class so that if any problems or questions may arise I can present clear evidence of the student's place within the classroom. Expectations will be made clear within the introductory period of class and in a welcome letter that will be sent home with students addressing parents. For substitutes I will do my best to provide a light workload, probably a video over the content area currently being discussed along with response questions that will be collected at the end of class for a participation grade.
