GRADES PRIMARY-1 LITERACY

Play is an important way for children to explore and learn

Do one or two ideas from any section each day. You can do these activities as many times as you like.

1) TELLING AND MAKING STORIES (10-15 MINUTES)

Look at a photo/ picture and tell a story about what you see. You could use a picture from a calendar, magazine, picture book or photo album. etc.

• Ask your child to tell you the story they see in the picture.

• You might write your child’s story down. Parent/older sibling can ask the child to help them write certain words, or sentences.

Encourage your child to tell stories to their favourite toy, stuffed animal or family member.

2) READING (10-15 MINUTES)

Read to and read with your child as often as you can. Read and reread the same books many times. If a word is difficult for your child when they are reading to you, try asking/saying the following to them:

1. Look at the picture.

2. What would make sense?

3. Look at the first letter of the word.

4. Do you know any parts of the word?

5. Can you sound it out?

Don’t let your child struggle with the word. Tell them the word. Here is a poem you could read together.

Spring Is Here!

I see purple flowers

I see bits of green grass I hear birds singing

I hear water running I feel the warm sun

I feel the soft pussy willows Spring is here!

Choose the activities that best fits your child

· Read the poem together. You can read the poem several times. Your child can read the words they know.

· Draw pictures that go with the poem.

· Circle the words in the poem with 3 letters in (a colour), circle the words with 4 letters in (a colour), circle the uppercase letters (in a colour), find letters from your name etc.

· Look out the window or go for a safe nature walk around your yard and talk about the signs of spring you notice.

· Copy some spring words from the poem.

· Write your own poem about spring. Draw a picture for your poem.


SING THE RHYME (20-30 MINUTES)

• Sing the rhyme.

• Draw the rhyme.

• Name words that rhyme with words that you see in the poem.

The second put on his shoes

The third laced them

The fourth waxed them

And the fifth, he made them shine

And zoom…he ran away

We found his old shoes the next day!

GRADE 2 LITERACY

Dear student,

A message for you

Today I would like to talk to you about some- thing important. Did you know that April 22, 2020 is Earth Day? There are several actions we can do to protect our planet. You can, for example, reduce food waste. How? You can fill your belly instead

of filling the trash. I suggest other activities to continue learning. Choose two or three activities to do every day. See you soon and we will talk in two weeks!

Find a word in my message of the day that sounds like friendship. Circle the words two, days and weeks. Find a sentence that ends with a question mark.

TELL A STORY (20-30 MINUTES)

Remember a favourite story or read one of your favorite stories again. Then tell it to a stuffed animal or a family member. Put some expression in your voice when you tell the story!

WRITE A LETTER (20-30 MINUTES)

Write a letter to your teacher. You can tell him/her about your day, your friends, or what you are reading now. You can read your letter out loud as if you were talking to your teacher.

WORD OF THE DAY (15-20 MINUTES)

Write the word three times quickly. Write the word in a sentence. Make a drawing of the word. Write the word on the ground, with clay or with little rocks.

ROLE PLAY (20–30 MINUTES)

Imagine you are a police officer. Imagine you work at the airport. Imagine you are a waiter or a waitress. Imagine you are walking in the desert. Imagine you are an animal doctor.

SING THE SONG (20–30 MINUTES)

Sing the song

Make drawings of the song.

Find the words that sound the same. TWINKLE, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are!

Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky.

When the blazing sun is gone, When the nothing shines upon,

GRADE 3 - LITERACY

All students in Grades 3 can participate in the following activities every day to strengthen their skills in Literacy. The everyday activities include:

READING EVERY DAY (15 MIN)

Read what you have in your home (books flyers, magazines, labels).

Things to think about when you are reading: What is this about? What have

I learned? What surprised me? How do I feel after reading this?

WRITING EVERY DAY (15 MIN)

You can use what you have at home for writing; paper, card- board, the inside of a cereal box. Writing can look different every day. It can be sentences, a list or a picture with labels. Where do writers get their ideas? Something that happened; Something you like;

Something you see; Something that excites you; Something that you won- der about.

WORKING WITH WORDS (5 MIN)

How many words can you write in 5 minutes? Think of words you have learned in your classroom, names or words you use in your writing. Try to break your record the next time you do it!

CALENDAR (15 MIN/DAY)

Make a weekly or monthly calendar-use whatever you have at home to do this (cardboard, paper). Write in an activity for each day, think of fun things you could add. Reflection Question: What activities can I add to help my mind and body?

THANK YOU CARD (15 MIN/DAY)


Reflection Questions:

Make a thank you card for an essential worker. It could be for a grocery store worker, nurse, doctor, mail carrier etc. Write a few sentences to thank them for all they are doing during this time. Hang your letter in a window for others to see.

Is there a member of your family who works in essential service that you could make a card for? Who are essential workers? How do they help us daily?

WORD WORK (15 MIN/DAY)


Reflection Questions:

Cut out medium size squares on paper or cardboard. On each square write a letter of the alphabet and a num- ber from 1-10. Make a word using your squares. Count the numbers on the squares you used to see how many points you get for your word.

Do I need to make more consonant or vowel squares? What letters should I use to get the most points?

CREATE AN EMOJI (15 MIN/DAY)

Create an emoji for how you are feeling. Write about your emoji, what feelings does it show and why you are feeling this way. Keep an emoji journal where you can check in daily.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION (15 MIN/DAY)


Reflection Questions:

Choose one of your favourite characters. You can pick a character from a book, tv show, movie or a video game. Write some words that you would use to describe that character.

Did I describe the character on the outside (physical traits) and the inside (personality traits)? Could I draw a picture that would help represent my character?

RETELL (15 MIN/DAY)


Reflection Questions:

Watch your favourite TV show, movie or read your favourite book. Write what happened, in the beginning, middle and end.

Did I think about what counts in a retell? ( Character, Setting and Events “Beginning, Middle, End”) Have I included enough details in my retell?
