Math Menus
This first group of lessons are what I call Math Menus. Quite literally, students choose from a selection of appetizers, a main course, and from several desserts in order to show what they know at the end of a unit. These menus were developed to allow students to choose activities that aligned with a favorite activity or a preferred method of showcasing their work. Since learning remotely was a possibility at the time, they were constructed with this constraint in mind, so learning artifacts as well as teacher comments and suggestions can be contained in the one file.
Mental Math/ Number Routines
Mental math can be tricky for students and teachers. Teachers often give several questions to solve, and students just list the answers that they "did in their head". Explaining how you arrive at a solution can be difficult to do and difficult to teach. I have found that using digital tools to help make thinking visible is one way to get the conversation going. Here are a few samples of activities where the integrated technology made all the difference.
Students fill cells with the same colour to indicate their sum is 1000. And test an open middle problem with a similar goal.
The key to success with this activity is choosing a number between 1-100 so you can make use of the hundred chart by toy theatre. Students love it!
Designed using google sites, this escape room has grade 8 students solving a puzzle (created using jigsawplanet.com), and answering questions from their first unit of study on Squares, Roots, and Pythagoras. Final entries accepted with a google form. So fun to create! Try it out!
