My take on coaching
My coaching experience
Karen currently teaches Junior High Mathematics at Ridgecliff Junior High.
This is what she had to say about her coaching experience:
"I would highly recommend having a math coach to anyone! I have had a math coach every year for the last 3 years, and I just requested another one for this year! They are not there to make more work for you. They are there to help you. As teachers, we can't possibly implement everything that is asked of us or everything we want to try. But if you have something in mind that you really want to try or work on improving, JoAnn, or any other math coach can help you do that. There's absolutely no judgment. A coach is there to help you make the changes or implement something new that YOU want. They will help you create activities you've been wanting to try. You won't regret it!"
Tricia currently teaches Junior High Mathematics at Oxford School.
This is what she had to say about her coaching experience:
"As an experienced teacher, but new to Jr High math, I was nervous about getting a math coach. I didn't want the pressure of having an expert in my room and was worried that I would constantly feel judged. In reality, having a math coach was awesome and I highly recommend it. I had someone who was willing to show me how to do things differently so I could better engage my students. She listened, shared resources, introduced me to new online tools and modelled her teaching style. Having a coach definitely helped me to be a better math teacher which in turn helped both the behavior and progress in my classes improve."
Carla currently teaches High School Mathematics at Millwood High.
This is what she had to say about her coaching experience:
"This year was the first time I have worked with a math coach and the experience has been very positive and insightful in many ways! It is great to have another enthusiastic like-minded person to work, reflect, and plan with. JoAnn has been by my side to help implement a new and challenging pilot course and having her as a co-teacher of sorts has been a life saver! We exchange ideas and she has shown me different things that I haven't had the time or opportunity to previously incorporate in my classroom (Polypad for example). She has also helped me set up systems that I am trying for the first time (non-permanent vertical surfaces). I would highly recommend taking advantage of any opportunity to work with a math coach, the only down-side to such an experience is having to 'give them back'!"
