Grades Primary to Two

Discussion Question: By now, I bet you are really starting to miss your friends, grandparents, or maybe your teachers! Who are some of the people you wish you could see or talk to or hug? What are some ways that you could feel closer to them?

Activity: All children experience benefits from sensory play, and it is especially useful for reducing anxiety. Sensory activities include water play (a sink full of soap and water and kitchen supplies can entertain for a long period); scooping rice/beans/sand; or playdough. My favourite recipe for easy no-cook playdough is below:

  • 2 cups plain flour (all purpose)

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1/2 cup salt

  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

  • 1 to 1.5 cups boiling water (add a bit at a time

  • food colouring

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl, and then add boiling water. I then add gel food colouring and knead, but this means messy hands!

Book: Join me as I read aloud Lifetimes by Bryan Mellonie & Robert Ingpen, a book to explain death to children. Please view this with your child, and be present to talk to him or her about death.

Grades 3-6

Let's explore our feelings, find a way to share the love to our beautiful Nova Scotia. Pick up your paper, arts and craft supplies and show your love in your window. Expressing our love in times when it is hard to connect with people can feel really good. Here is an idea I enjoyed with my child.
