The goal of this website is to be a resource for educators, students and families.
One focus of this site is ways to practice reading and writing high frequency words (HFW) so they become sight words (words someone knows just by sight/looking at it) to help increase reading fluency and comprehension.
Not all words "sound out" nicely- there are exceptions to the sound/symbol relationship that students learn at an early age (ex: "said" sounds like it should be spelled "sed" - students need explicit instruction on the sound /ai/ makes).
There are many ways, other than flash cards and exposure, to learn high frequency words so they become sight words. Discover what is engaging for your student/child and incorporate that. I have included some videos you may find inspiration from.
I Hope you find some helpful hints here!
Here you will find me demonstrating some "helpful hints", that you may want to try at home when practicing your high frequency words.
Here you will find the 109 "Power words" that make up 50% of words found in children's texts. We will be using this to guide our practice of high frequency words.
Here you will find some choice boards and activities that can be used to practice high frequency words.
Here you will find some examples of lessons I have made to work with small groups of students. The activities can be adapted to words that work for you.
