High frequency words are those that appear most often in books/text. Once students have quick recall of a word, it becomes a sight word for them (a word they know just by looking at it).

The list we will be using as a guide to learning high frequency words is the "109 Power Words" as found in 'Shifting the Balance' by Jan Burkins & Kari Yates.

*More words will be added to students' personal high frequency lists as we explore the words students need to learn in order to be successful in reading their books and writing their stories.

You can find a copy of the "109 Power words" here. These words make up 50% of the words found in children's texts.                                              (*Scroll mid way down the page to download it).

The "109 Power words" list is from the book, 'Shifting the Balance'. It is one of the resources I will resources I will be utalizing to support students.
