Grade 9

In grade 9, there are three different programs available to students at Hants East Rural High:

English

Students in the English program will take courses in English plus one second language course. Students have the option to choose either Core French 9 or Mikmaq Language 9 as their second language course.

Courses in the English program:

French Immersion

Regional Centres for Education in Nova Scotia may offer a French Immersion program to those students in Anglophone schools who wish to develop a greater degree of competence in French. The immersion program is an alternative approach to learning French within a structure that provides greater intensity for learning and teaching and focuses on literacy through the various disciplines taught in French.

Early French Immersion begins in grade Primary and continues to grade 12. Students in this program receive 70-75 percent instruction in French at the junior high level, and 50 percent instruction in French at the senior high level. The 50 percent of instructional time in French Immersion at the high school level represents a minimum of nine credits taught in French (excluding Core French).

Courses in the French Immersion program:

Integrated French

Regional Centres for Education in Nova Scotia may offer an Integrated French program to those students in Anglophone schools who wish to develop a greater degree of competence in French. Integrated French begins in grade 7 and continues to grade 12.

In grade 9, students take a French language arts course and Éducation civique 9.

Students in grades 10 to 12 take a French language arts course and one other subject in French (excluding Core French). This second course must come from the areas of Career Planning, Personal Development or Social Studies. The French language arts course is designed to support the language needs of students in the second subject area taught.
