The unit begins with a lesson that reviews what students learned in grade primary geometry. This lesson will refresh students’ memory of what they already know about geometry and reactivate their geometrical thinking. This lesson will determine where students are at, if they need additional time spent on their sorting ability, and when they are ready to proceed onto the subsequent lessons. The lessons then progress into enhancing students’ sorting ability with both 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, extending from their acquired skill of sorting 3-D objects by one attribute in grade primary. Lesson 4, a 3-D shape sort, prepares students for lesson 5, “Feel-It Match”, as it gets students working with 3-D objects again, rather than just 2-D shapes. Lesson 5 will encourage students to begin thinking about object and shape characteristics, properties, relationships, and be introduced to proper terminology which will aid them in their copying abilities in lessons 6 and 7 using geoboards. The copying of patterns in lesson 7 will help students understand that shapes can be made up of many smaller shapes. This understanding of composite shapes will aid students as they work with tangrams in lesson 8. Students’ acquired understanding of composite shapes from lessons 7 and 8 will aid them in completing lesson 9, “Shape Hunt”, where they will search for shapes in objects in their environment. The unit concludes with this lesson as it shows students how their learning of shapes and objects connects with the real world. It helps students see that there is relevance, importance, and meaning to their learning.
