Geometry is one of the main areas in mathematics for students to explore. It is inevitable that students will encounter geometry frequently throughout their educational journeys in a variety of subjects. Throughout this unit students will be given the opportunity to improve their sorting skills, replicating skills, and identifying skills of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes. The enhancement and mastery of these skills will better prepare students for success in future grades such as sorting 3-D objects and 2-D shapes by two attributes in grade two and describing 3-D objects using appropriate mathematical language in grade three. Becoming familiar and comfortable with geometry will also help students to successfully navigate through measurement when they are introduced to perimeter and area in subsequent grades.
Learners will explore with their sorting skills towards the begining of the unit. This will encourage learners to become familiar with shape characteristics and properties, and be introduced to geometrical concepts and terminology.
Proceeding through the unit, learners will began to explore with their replicating skills. This will encourage learners to recognize that shapes can be composite, shapes made up of other shapes, and enhance their ability to construct and deconstruct a variety of shapes.
The unit will conclude with exploring learner's identifying skills. Learners will demonstrate their ability to recognize simple shapes in composite shapes and to identify shapes in their environments. This will encourage learners to see their learning as importance and relevant.
