What do School Counsellors Do?
As a trusted professional embedded in the school community, the school counsellor is qualified to work in therapeutic, consultative, and program capacities to comprehensively support student well-being and development, learning and achievement, and life transition and career planning. School Counsellors are trained mental health care providers who have the training and capacity to provide direct mental health support to help support students who’s needs represent some of the most common and identifiable mental health problems and disorders in society. In addition, by way of their teaching experience, School Counsellors understand school culture and have a unique skill set that enables them to work with classroom teachers on preventative and proactive strategies.
When should I contact my counsellor?
Students should contact their school counsellor with:
Academic concerns
Social/emotional problems
Interpersonal conflicts
Class scheduling and courses
Career exploration
Post-secondary planning
Parents/guardians should contact their child’s school counsellor with:
Concerns regarding academic performance
Concerns regarding social and/or emotional well-being
Information about special needs/ family situation
Coordinating meetings with teachers and other support personnel
College, career, and post-secondary planning
How to contact a school counsellor about a student?
Every student has an assigned counsellor that remains with them throughout their three years at CPA. A school counsellor may be contacted by:
