New bulletin boards are now placed in the upstairs hallway. Naomi has been placing student work on the boards.
We placed an order for 5 new picnic tables for the school. They will be placed in front of the school for student and teacher use.
A number of Cabot students participated in the first annual writers contest. Awards were handed out for 1st, 2nd, 3rd at both the middle school and high school level. The contest winners had their names placed on a plaque that will be displayed at the school.
A number of teachers will be working together to hold an art contest for middle school and high school students. 1st,2nd,3rd place awards will be awarded for both middle school and high school. Students can submit upto 5 pieces of original artwork.
Students just finished participating in the Wow Reading Challenge. This has been happening now for 9 years.
Members of the Earth Club have been busy picking up garbage around the school. They did a clean-up for Earth Day. Naomi had mentioned that it would be nice if we could get garbage cans that the lids can't blow off of and the animals cannot get in.
Grade 6 and 7 students were able to participate in the Ski In School Program on the Friday before March Break. Unfortunately we were only able to get the students to the hill once due to the fact that the students missed so much time due to the road closure and online learning.
Hoping that next winter we will be able to go more often.
Donnie is in the process of looking at scheduling for next year. It is possible that we may gain a .5 position. Donnie mentioned that the French position will be very difficult to fill since we will need two French teachers. It will also be difficult to fill two music positions at NOS.
There is a shortage of TA’s, substitutes, cleaners and bus drivers. All positions have been advertised but appear that nobody is interested. The cleaning position has also been advertised to students .
Lieutenant Governor applications have been submitted. This will be awarded on school and community involvement as well as academic standing. Ceremony will be held on May 31 in Port Hawkesbury.
Provincial Language Arts and Math assessments for grade 8 will take place the last of May and the first week of June.
Grade 6 provincial assessments have been graded. The scores overall were not good provincially but we have not yet been provided with the official data.
Heather has met with the graduates. They have the choice between a regular ceremony as well as the type of ceremony that was held during Covid. The graduates have opted to go with the traditional ceremony. We will look at cutting back the attendees at our graduation ceremony. In the past community presenters would attend the ceremony but this year we may do away with this. SAC is in agreement with this.
May 21 we will know if students and teachers have to continue to wear masks in the school. Students may have to wear masks for prom depending on public health guidelines.
We hope to move things back to normal in September. We are noticing that there is a total disconnect with kids and school. We need to look for ways to engage students.
Attendance is a major issue among our students.
We would like to get the soccer program going again come the fall. Naomi is going to reach out to a community member to see if they would be interested in coaching.
New soccer net has been purchased for the school ($6000) as well as a GAGA Pit ($2000).
The school will be getting $6.00 per student for a food grant. We will possibly use this money to purchase meal cards for students who cannot afford to purchase meals.
There are concerns about the food that is coming out of the cafeteria. There are no real meals being made and it is more just grab and go foods with no nutritional value. CBVRCE is looking for another service provider Donnie informed us.
