Why Fire Tablets for reading?
Amazon’s Fire Tablets are an e-reader option for students with reading difficulties. Unlike many e-readers they have a text-to-speech option and a headphone jack. Schools purchase Kindle books (very affordable and you can purchase 1 book and put it on up to 6 devices at a time), which have a wide selection of books and genres.
What’s the Plan?
I’m putting out a “call for expression of interest” to trial up to 5 Fire Tablets in their classroom (for now, a maximum of 10 Fire Tablets per school). Ideally, classes where students are reading novels/completing novel studies, plays, and/or have silent reading regularly built into their schedule.
How does it work?
The Fire Tablets will be delivered to the interested teacher’s classroom. I will set them up with a unique gnspes email account (to use to buy Kindle books and register the Fire Tablets), demo how to buy/manage books, and enable the text-to-speech function. Easy!
What do I have to do?
I will provide the device (fire tablet) but the school is responsible for purchasing the kindle books (using an Amazon Gift Card or linking a credit card to the account). Books range in prices from $1.50 (for plays like MacBeth, Romeo & Juliet) to $13 (for some novels), typically. Keep in mind that you can purchase a book once and put it on all 5 devices in your room.
I’m in!
Interested staff can contact me directly (boudreauj@cbvrce.ca) and cc an administrator at the school and we can work to set you up!
