Assistive Technology

CBVRCE

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology is a range of strategies and resources which includes services and tools used to enable a student to meet outcomes or to improve or maintain a student’s ability to meet outcomes. Assistive technology has the potential to increase a student’s control over objects, daily activities, age-appropriate experiences and subsequent learning. The use of AT should not be viewed as an activity in itself, but as a means toward achieving goals. The student planning process should be used to identify and utilize appropriate assistive technology to achieve outcomes and maximize student participation.

How do I access AT Services for my student?

Assistive Technology may be considered at any stage of a student’s learning development. An assessment may be initiated by the Student Planning Team, which may include principals, classroom teachers, learning support teachers, students, parents/guardians, and/or other professionals. To initiate an assessment, an Assistive Technology referral form must be completed in TIENET and forwarded to the Assistive Technology Consultant. The parental consent for services form must also be completed and signed by the student's parent/guardian, and uploaded to TIENET. Assessments are done in the school setting by Assistive Technology Consultant, Jessica Boudreau (or a member of the Assistive Technology Team). At times, a formal assessment is not necessary and supports are provided through consultation or teacher training. Some AT supports are provided in consultation with other specialists, such as speech-language pathologists or occupational therapists. Appropriate materials are obtained through the cooperation of the Student Services Department, the Technology Department, and the school.

AT/AAC

Students' use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) is supported by a variety of staff. Speech-Language Pathologists, AT Support Workers, Classroom Teachers, Learning Support Teachers, CYCPs, etc. are integral in implementation of AAC for our students. Kelly Roberts, CBVRCE's AAC/AT Specialist works alongside school-based SLPs and other staff to support AAC programming and initiatives. She also works directly with students to promote independent use of their AAC system.
