This auspicious event begin with the Prayer song, after which the lamp was lighted by the both the dignitaries, Ms. Kuljeet Kahlon, Dr. Jyotinder Kaur Chaddha and one of the participants.
Dr. Jyotinder Kaur Chaddah delivered the welcomed address to the participants. Dr. Chaddah is the Faculty In-charge of Marketing and Academic Coordinator (Part-Time), and has vast knowledge in different aspects of Management. She shared her experiences about the Oxford University, which she had recently visited. She said that the library collection must meet the interest of the readers. One has to move the changing times.
Mr. Giridhar M. Kunkur has worked three decades in the Library Profession. At Present he is working as the Librarian, Chief, Publications and Media Relation Unit at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan. He emphasized that Librarians have a tremendous role to play in the Society. Reading habits have been reducing in the people and it’s up to the librarian to bring back this habit. He explained in detail the new innovations taking place in his library like the Bookfinder4u, Daily News, I just read this book, Communication Panel – not happy with this service; document not found on the shelf; Database not accessible or Book Recommendation and Monthly Info Bulletin.
One has to catchup with the technology, change our mindset and connect with the end-users. Makeover from the traditional librarian to the Modern Librarian.
Dr. Sandeep Bhavsar, Librarian, Learning Resource Centre, Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, Mumbai gave an overall view of the changes happening in the library profession. Quality Collection Development should be the main focus of the modern librarian. New developments like the Instant chat on WebOpac; thought Leadership Services; Knowledge Hub for all the news, Fedgate – A Single point search for all the resources; Infocapsule – This covers the new arrivals of books, abstracts of latest articles, news and developments with links to full texts are some of the technological advancement installed in his library.
He also pointed out that we should update ourselves with the current happenings in our profession. Some of the websites we should go through are CII; FICCI; ASSOCHAM; US-India Bus iness Council; UK – India Business Council, Nashik Manufacturing Association, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel Associations. Be aware of the current trends in Management Educations, New Publications, Seminars/Talks and Workshops being conducted, etc.
Mr. Kamble gave an overview of the Seminar. He stated that the new innovations pointed out should be installed in our libraries and utilize them as soon as possible.
Ms. Kuljeet G. Kahlon, Library Manager, GNIMS summarized the sessions and gave the vote of thanks. She wished everyone a very Happy Librarian’s Day from the bottom of her heart. Dr. S. R. Ranganathan was the first librarian who identified the real need of Library Science Education in our country. Due to advancement in ICT, the customer's taste and preference has changed. So to satisfy their needs, the library also adopted innovative techniques. Today our aim should be to think new innovative methods to connect with more and more users.
Only good technology is not enough, it should be supported by good attitude only then the library will be a boon for the students. As a great author Shiv Khera has explained in his book “you can win" - A person gets a job or promotion 85% of the time because of his attitude and 15% of the time because due to his intelligence, Knowledge or a degree.
She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to our Chairman Mr. Gurinder Singh Bawa and Former Director General Dr. Ajit Singh for their visionary Leadership, Mr. Bigyan P. Verma, Director for all support and cooperation in the smooth conduct of this event. She thanked both the speakers for their presentations and sharing their valuable knowledge with the participants. Dr. Jyotinder Kaur Chaddah for welcoming the guest and also for spending her valuable time in this event since morning. Faculty members for their active participation.
She also thanked all the participants for their patient listening to the speakers. She hoped that all of them gained knowledge about the new innovations going on in the library profession and will utilize the same in their own libraries. She also thanked the IT Department for all the arrangements and Ms. Rajinder Kaur for anchoring this seminar. Last but not the least, she thanked the Library Team for always giving a helping hand for all the events organized by the Library.
