Curriculum Overview

Biomedical Sciences Course - Biomechanics

In addition to their core content classes (listed below), students will take the 7th grade biomedical sciences course. This elective focuses on biomechanics, including the action, movement, and forces in the body.


Students start with an introduction to physics and the scientific method, and then focus on motion, force, and simple machinery. Research and activities within each unit focus on the connection between the human body and each concept.

To investigate how physics relates to medicine, students will research, plan, and construct their own prosthesis design. Upon completion of 7th grade, students will earn their second title in their race for the Biomechanical Mustangs Triple Crown.

Mathematics

Students who took the 6th grade advanced course will be placed in 7th grade advanced math. 7th grade advanced math covers the remaining half of 7th grade math and 8th grade math. On this path, students will take Algebra 1 as an 8th graders.

Students who took the 7th grade advanced course as a 6th grader will be eligible to take Algebra 1 as a 7th grader to earn their first high school credit.

Civics

In a 7th grade civics course, students can expect to explore the rights and responsibilities of American citizens and the inner works of our federal, state, and local governments.

English Language Arts & Reading

In 7th grade advanced Reading & ELA Magnet students will continue to expand and develop their reading comprehension and writing skills. 7th grade Reading & ELA courses focus on:

  • analysis of literature, short stories, and informational texts from varied periods of time

  • creating connections from background knowledge and other texts outside of the literature read in class

  • utilizing knowledge of Greek and Latin roots and affixes and context clues to determine meaning of words

  • writing formal essays, summaries, short response answers, and other varied purposes

  • collaboration amongst peers

  • effective use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling

  • proficient typing and computer skills

Science

Most Magnet students will continue 7th grade in an advanced science course. The curriculum throughout all three years of middle school science is set up as a spiral review to include the following 4 bodies of knowledge:

  • The Nature of Science

  • Earth and Space Science

  • Physical Science

  • Life Science

Each year, students learning will build on knowledge learned in prior years to expand on each body of knowledge.
